The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 1039 hours work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary between park sites depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding.
Performs Maintenance Worker Leader (Trails) duties such as:
1. Leader - This position is a working leader of a trail crew. The incumbent has a complete knowledge of trail construction and maintenance techniques and must be able to recognize existing and future maintenance problems. Incumbent provides input to the supervisor on trail work priorities, personnel and training recommendations, and equipment supply needs. Incumbent is responsible for daily on-side decisions concerning workflow and assignment and distribution of work for their crew. Hold weekly safety sessions or as needed especially when initiating a new task or operating specialized equipment. Within the parameter of knowledge, training, experience, and resources, keeps fellow employees and supervisor aware of hazards, standard violations, and deviation from accepted work procedures and practices in the park environment.
2. Rigging - Performs and leads workers in rigging operations including planning, selecting, assembling, and installing weight handling gear. Knowledgeable in strengths, capabilities, and working load limits of equipment and materials used in rigging operations. Maintains and repairs rigging equipment and recognizes unsafe equipment and removing from service.
3. Carpentry - Performs and leads carpentry work, primarily using heavy log and rough-sawn lumber, in the construction, stabilization, and maintenance to historic and non-historic structures.
4. Maintenance/Laborer - Performs and leads general light maintenance tasks on park trails. This includes brushing vegetation back from trail corridor edges, out-slopping the downhill edges of trail corridors, clearing waterbars and open styled drainages, repairing/replacing trail markers/cairns, repairing trail tread, removing debris from trail corridors, etc.

Ability to Lead or Supervise (Screen-out). This includes work such as: leading work crews executing difficult and complex trail construction and maintenance projects to the highest standard such as installation and repair of rock and log water bars, rock and log steps, rock and log retaining walls, drainage structures, rip-rap tread, bridges and signs. This experience includes planning project logistics as well as extensive knowledge and skills in the areas of carpentry, dry and wet stone masonry, trail condition assessment, use of hand tools and equipment operation specifically in a trail maintenance and construction capacity. Working knowledge regarding the strengths, capabilities, and working load limits of equipment and materials used in rigging operations including wire ropes, grip hoists, anchor systems, wire rope clips, shackles and hooks, blocks and wire rope grips. Passing on to other workers the instructions received from supervisors. Assigning tasks to be performed by individual members of the group. Working along with other workers and setting the pace.
