Off-Park Ranger

Sesquicentennial State Park, affectionately known to locals as "Sesqui," is a spacious, green getaway in the heart of the Sandhills region. Once you're immersed in the 1,400 acres of pines, camping sites, and nature trails you forget just how close you are to bustling, downtown Columbia, South Carolina.

Job Purpose and Duties:

Under general supervision, assists with overall operation and maintenance of a State Park. Performs diversified duties as governed by general instruction, policies and standard operating procedures of the Department. Assumes the responsibilities of the Park Manager in the absence of higher level employees.

1) Assists with park administrative duties in accordance with Department policy and procedures and planning of long and short-term goals.

2) Collect and account for revenue and produce required reports.

3) Instruct, supervise and perform routine and preventative maintenance on grounds, buildings and equipment to meet established standards. Maintains a safe work environment.

4) Enforces park rules, regulations, and policies within established limits and in accordance with department policy.

5) Work to accomplish the mission of the Park Service through the core values of Stewardship and Service. Effectively deliver quality customer service and address visitor concerns in a timely manner. Work to ensure that visitors leave with a positive experience and a desire to return.

6) Manages assigned specific operations to include public use areas, boat rentals, facilities, and Host Program or Safety Officer. Assists in control of inventories of equipment, supplies, and other items. Complete related reports as required.

7) Performs continuous relation activities for the park by the distribution of general park and park services information, educational and recreational activities as required. Interprets the cultural and natural resources of the State Park Service to park visitors.

8) Practice and promote teamwork within the work unit/office, throughout the agency and with external agency stakeholders. Represents office as an active member on agency teams assigned throughout the year.

Associates degree in Park Management or related field with one(1) years of Park Ranger experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Requirements:

1) Position requires medium to heavy lifting, bending, waling, and standing on uneven terrain, crawling and working at heights. Exposure to weather conditions, cleaning agents, and other material used in maintaining park facilities and grounds. Position will require frequent travel between Sesquicentennial and Goodale State Parks. Position requires residence in agency-provided housing. Position requires flexible work schedule to include weekends and holidays.

2) Knowledge of park policies and regulations. Skill in the use of equipment necessary for maintenance activities. Ability to prepare reports and schedules. Ability to supervise and train subordinates. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

3) Must possess valid South Carolina's Drivers license.

Actual Job Location: Sesquicentennial State Park

Full-time, 40 hours per week rotating schedule including weekends and holidays.
