Summary of Work


Work involves significant responsibility for attorneys and assistance with legal filings, coordination of administrative office support, and/or legal functions of office. Therefore, work at this level is of a highly complex and sensitive nature, often requiring contact with clients and the general public, and requires a high degree of knowledge, skills, and abilities and/or specialization in computer applications such as Microsoft Word. Work activities involve decision-making within parameters of approved policies and procedures.


  • Prepare drafts and finals of letters, legal pleadings, opinions, various forms, and other work products, ensuring that documents are accurate and in proper form.
  • Electronically file legal documents with the proper court.
  • Verify legal citations through Westlaw, Blue Book; Gregg Reference Manual, etc.
  • Maintain/update cases through the JustWare system and office trackers.
  • Perform receptionist duties, including interacting with members of the public, answering telephones, and assisting consumers via telephone and in person.


In addition to the monthly salary, this position includes fully paid health insurance for employee and family (with a wellness rider included), the option to participate in employee-paid dental and vision for employee and family, participation in the state NDPERS defined benefit retirement plan as well as the option to participate in the 457 deferred compensation plan, the option to contribute to a medical spending account, and earning annual leave and sick leave.


Employees in this position are eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.


This is an in-person position located in Bismarck, ND.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Associate degree with major coursework in office support, legal, business, or office education and four years of work experience performing a variety of high-level complex office support, clerical or secretarial work that includes lead work or office coordination responsibilities. (Note: The hiring authority will consider substituting additional work experience for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis if the experience provides the knowledge and skills required to perform the duties of this position.)
  • Ability to use and understand a personal computer, with knowledge and use of Windows, and experience in word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience performing legal office support and experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Proficiency in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and formatting skills.
  • Excellent prioritization, time management, organizational, multi-tasking, accuracy, and attention to detail skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate tactfully and with emphasis on customer service.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, harmonious working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Display strong interpersonal skills in dealing with customers and co-workers; utilize appropriate telephone etiquette; demonstrate appropriate written and verbal communication skills; demonstrate ability to perform standard office tasks and operate standard office equipment such as telephone, computer, printers, scanner, photocopier, and fax machines.
