DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Engineer I is distinguished from the Engineer II in that the Engineer I class performs entry- level trainee support and sub-task work on routine project assignments requiring the use of basic engineering skills, principles and practices, whereas the Engineer II class independently works on many phases or sub-tasks of a project or entire projects of moderate complexity reflecting a full understanding of the application of engineering principles. As experience is gained, incumbents will assume greater independence and wider latitude of professional judgment in completion of assignments. As compared to Engineer II, the Engineer I assignments are more routine in nature and would not normally require as high a degree of professional judgment and knowledge.
