Position Responsibilities:


The Department of African American Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications for the position of Program Coordinator (Hourly). This role, funded by the Mellon Foundation-Affirming Multivocal Humanities grant, is essential to supporting the department’s academic, research, and public engagement initiatives. The Program Coordinator will work closely with the department chair, faculty, students, and community partners to ensure the effective planning and execution of departmental events, communications, and student programming.


Key responsibilities include


  • Organize academic events such as lectures, symposia, and panel discussions.
  • Plan and coordinate workshops and research training opportunities for undergraduate students.
  • Manage department social media accounts and digital presence to promote departmental initiatives.
  • Assist with marketing and advertising of events through digital and print media.
  • Provide administrative support to faculty and the department chair as needed.
  • Maintain organized records related to events, student programming, and departmental communications.
  • Support the daily operations of the department and carry out additional duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor�s degree (B.A.) from an accredited institution.
  • 1-2 years of experience in research support, event planning, or organizational administration.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and community members.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience working in a university or academic setting.
  • Familiarity with African American Studies or related disciplines.
  • Proficiency in social media platforms and digital communication tools.
