Valley County is looking for a
Building Technician to provide technical and customer service support for the county’s Building Department in its permitting, inspection, and enforcement processes. Although the successful candidate will initially spend much of their time in-office providing administrative support for the Building Department, the expectation will be for the Building Technician to spend increasing amounts of time in the field assisting with inspection and enforcement processes, eventually becoming a certified Building Inspector.This is a full-time position with full employee benefits, and is a great opportunity for someone interested in a long-term career with opportunities for on-the-job training and advancement potential.
The county’s building department ensures that building construction projects in Valley County are performed safely and in compliance with building codes and ordinances. Building Technicians assist in this process by assisting the public with reviewing and issuing building permits, collecting associated fees, answering building construction-related questions, interacting with building contractors, investigating complaints, and performing basic inspections.
The expectation of this position is that the successful candidate will receive significant on-the-job training, textbook and classroom learning, and hands-on experience - enough to be able to test for and become certified as a Building Inspector within two years.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent, with some experience in the construction field preferred. Experience with standard office equipment, including the use of a personal computer and various software applications, is required. Excellent customer service and communication skills are also required as this position will have significant interaction with members of the public, including those in the construction industry. A willingness to enroll in and attend online trainings, read and study written materials, and successfully pass written tests is also required as the successful candidate is expected to become certified as a Building Inspector within two years of hire.
As this position requires inspections of construction sites, candidates must be willing and able to drive a county vehicle, traverse broken and uneven terrain on foot, and work outside and in all weather conditions.
