Summary of Work


While this position offers the potential for remote work within North Dakota, we prefer the candidate to work in person at our Bismarck office during the probationary period to support onboarding and team integration.


We are seeking an Attorney with strong leadership and interpersonal skills, highly effective communication and collaboration skills, and exceptional legal research and analytical skills. As the Attorney for the Insurance and Securities Department, you will:


  • Provide legal advice and opinions to the Commissioner
  • Oversee enforcement actions related to Department investigations and examinations
  • Draft orders, rules, and legislation


Represent the Department in administrative hearings, legislative hearings, and civil court proceedings



This integral role works in collaboration with the Department's team of investigators and examiners.

Duties and Tasks


  • Perform legal analysis and draft orders based on investigation and examination findings
  • Represent the Department in administrative and civil proceedings
  • Negotiate settlements
  • Respond to interpretive opinion requests
  • Provide legal advice to the Commissioner and team related to examinations, investigations, and enforcement matters
  • Develop expertise and remain current on investment industry innovations, fraud trends, and state and federal regulatory developments


Coordinate with other securities regulators on multi-jurisdictional matters



Minimum Qualifications


A Juris Doctorate degree and a license to practice law in North Dakota


Preferred Qualifications


  • Highly effective communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work well with diverse constituent groups which may include fraud victims, industry representatives, attorneys, issuers, and other government agencies
  • Exceptional legal research and analytical skills
  • Work experience with the legislative process
  • Work experience in the financial services industry or for a financial regulator
  • Legal research and writing work experience
  • Work experience providing legal representation during administrative hearings or civil or criminal proceedings in state or federal court


Work experience drafting orders, rules, and legislation
