This position exists to advise students and support the administration of the

Upward Bound Program (UB) by providing college prep curriculum advising, tutoring, supplemental instruction, and college readiness experiences and skills for high school students in the Dayton Public School District.


The Academic Advisor is responsible for the implementation of the services and activities that are essential to achieving the goals and objectives of the Upward Bound grant as approved by the U.S. Department of Education. The major responsibilities of the position include monitoring individual/group tutoring and instructional sessions, developing curriculum; administering testing instruments and surveys, planning cultural exposure activities and college visitations for student participants; developing and monitoring individualized plans for academic success and financial literacy of UB participants, serving as a liaison between the Upward Bound Program and the administration and staff at the target schools, recruiting program students; planning and coordinating service learning projects; and collecting and submitting data used for academic planning and for the annual performance report.


Other responsibilities include assisting the Project Director with Upward Bound Program operations and when needed, providing support for program activities sponsored by the Office of Student Enrichment Programs.


The salary for this position begins at $49,701.00 and is commensurate with education and experience.

Principal Accountabilities
ADVISING* Coordinate tutoring and supplemental teaching experiences for program students
  • Recommend courses at the target high schools, at Upward Bound, and through the dual enrollment programs for UB participants
  • Administer and review tests for program students
  • Develop academic success plans for program students through individualized educational plans
  • Coordinate service learning experiences for students for academic enrichment
  • Develop a college and career readiness educational program for students
  • Advise students to increase financial literacy and to develop a financial plan for college
  • Plan cultural exposure trips and college visits


MARKETING/RECRUITMENT
  • Conduct Upward Bound orientation/information sessions to students, parents, and teachers
  • Assist students through the application process and guide students through all processes to include registration, enrollment and retention
  • Advertise Upward Bound and services to target schools and support programs within the Office of Student Enrichment Programs
  • Develop relationships with educators and community leaders to improve collaborative opportunities for access and persistence


ADMINISTRATIVEFUNCTIONS
  • Process applications and select Upward Bound Program participants
  • Implement the day-to-day operations of the Upward Bound Program to deliver student services - tutoring, instructional curriculum, academic records review, cultural events and college visits
  • Monitor and report participant retention and persistence, academic and technical successes
  • Develop for review and analysis persistence data and enrollment management activities
  • Log regular office hours at target schools to ensure ongoing relationships with stakeholders and to facilitate advising and marketing/recruitment accountabilities


PROGRAMDEVELOPMENT
  • Assist the Project Director with compliance of regulations as outlined in the agreement with the U.S. Department of Education; assist with the completion of the Annual Performance Report, and provide services that keep the Upward Bound Program in compliance.


Requirements
  • Minimum of a bachelor�s degree in education, social sciences or related field required; master�s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience serving at-risk populations required
  • Experience implementing high school academic curriculum aligned with state standards and college readiness required
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and accomplish multiple tasks, while meeting deadlines, required
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills required
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow through on assignments required
  • Ability to sit, stand and/or walk for long periods of time while chaperoning high school student events/trips
  • Knowledge of working with diverse populations required
  • Ability to work long hours during overnight travel and while chaperoning high school student trips required
  • Use personal vehicle daily for travel to and from target schools and for general travel necessary to achieve program goals required
