RESPONSIBILITIES (not meant to be inclusive of all duties to be assigned):


1. This position is a split position working in both the Public Works department as an Equipment Operator and in the Water/Wastewater Department as an Operator as directed.


2. Performs all water plant daily operations such as back washing filters, performing laboratory tests required by the Department of Health, adjusting chemical feed rates, recording daily flows, performs daily and weekly testing, mixes chemicals.


3. Performs all wastewater plant operations such as recording daily flows, testing required by MPCA, and adjusting for process control as needed.


4. Provides and records general maintenance of both plants’ blowers, HVAC, pumps, bar screens etc.


5. Operates and maintains pumps control panels chlorinators, chemical feeders, cleans tanks, aerators,change filters and changes chlorine cylinders.


6. Performs basic maintenance to tower and pump house buildings including inspecting paints and changing light bulbs; painting as required.


7. Monitors and repairs plant equipment including changing small amp fuses, checks apps, cleaning and servicing wastewater tanks and performing annual inspections.


8. inspects and monitors lift stations for proper operation of motors and pumps, checks well for proper elevation, performs maintenance at lift stations including repairing and replacing fans, heaters, and submersible pumps; inspects, cleans and changes oil on motors, cleans lift stations.


9. Assists with inspections/cleaning accelerators, back wash tanks, lagoon water decanting.


10. Assists with monitoring/performing biosolids lab and data entry of volatile solids and sludge.


11. Performs maintenance on residential and City water and sewer infrastructure.


12. Assist with the maintenance and repair of city streets including patching potholes gratings sweeping streets removing debris placing cones or barricades around hazardous areas.


13. Assist with concrete work including finishing curbs and sidewalks, straightens, repairs, and replaces street signs that are damaged.


14. Assists with shade tree maintenance including removal removing diseased trees, splitting wood, and trimming trees and chipping tree brush, plants trees, replaces and removes flowerpots and lays sod.


15. Operates front end loader and trucks for removal of snow from city streets, alleys, and parking lots,lays salt and gravel, and floods ice rinks.


16. Operates dump truck to transport gravel.


17. Operates backhoe to excavate including digging graves and ditches.


18. Picks up garbage bags and spilled trash along residential collection routes and dumps it into the truck empties dumpsters and commercial businesses into truck and remove snow in front of dumpsters if needed delivers dumpsters to park or other locations for special events and removes after events.


19. Performs general maintenance such as greasing and cleaning department equipment.


20. Assist in putting up and removing flags, holiday decorations, and street signs.


21. Paints buildings, performs routine plumbing and carpentry repairs.


22. Performs boiler repair and maintenance.


23. Performs furnace repairs and maintenance.


24. Performs maintenance on bench building and maintains beach area.


25. Performs campground repairs and maintenance winterizes campground building.


26. purchases plumbing supplies and building materials, obtains supervisory approval for large items.


27. performs miscellaneous cleaning maintenance and repair work as needed.


28. Assisted repair of water main breaks and sewer line problems including rotting and jetting, assist with rebuilding and cleaning approach basing and grapes and storm sewers, operates jackhammer as needed, steams culverts, performs hydrant maintenance and replaces water meters.


29. Inspects and monitors city wells for proper operation places packing in the pumps maintains and repairs motors replaces small fuses as needed.


30. Performs locating for water and sewer lines.


31. Performs grounds maintenance such as mows grass, applies weed killer, sweeps, shovels, snowplowing,recycling duties and truck driving duties as assigned by public works.


32. Performs other equipment operator II duties as assigned by the foreman.


33. Assists other departments as needed, and other duties as assigned by supervisor.


WORK SCHEDULE: Generally, day shift, Monday - Friday, On-Call rotation Monday- Sunday for Water/Wastewater Plant, required to work some weekends, evenings, and holidays.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


1. Must possess a valid Minnesota Class D driver’s license and obtain a Class B license with air brake endorsement within one year of employment or as City schedules.


2. Must possess valid Class D water and wastewater licenses.


3. Ability to:


  • a. Read and interpret technical manuals to determine solutions to a variety of operational and maintenance problems.
  • b. Operate and maintain water/wastewater equipment and vehicles.
  • c. Operate computer controls and Scada interface for process control.


4. Work experience showing the ability to:


  • a. Communicate effectively with other City employees and the public.
  • b. Prioritize work and to work independently with minimal direction.
  • c. Assist with all departments as needed.
  • d. Follow oral and written instructions and maintain records


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


5. Demonstrated experience working with:


  • a. The use of the tools, methods, operations, and materials used in the water and wastewater operations and laboratory analysis.
  • b. Water and wastewater testing and treatments. Including the testing and treating of water and wastewater collection equipment and facilities.
  • c. Experience working within occupational hazards and in taking the necessary safety precautions to perform manual maintenance work with water and wastewater collection systems.


6. Operation of a water/wastewater plant.


  • a. Federal and State laws, municipal ordinances, and regulatory requirements for water facilities and wastewater collection systems.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (those necessary to perform the essential functions of this job):


1. Repetitive manual labor requiring use of large motor skills such as sitting standing or walking for a long period, frequent bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, shoveling, pushing, and pulling, and twisting and turning.


2. Specific vision ability includes seeing control panels and computer screens and distinguishing colors.


3. Ability to use fine motor skills when operating equipment installing plumbing and performing repairs.


4. Regularly hear and speak when conversing in person or by phone.


5. Regularly lift and carry from 25 pounds up to 100.


6. Requires ability to work at heights up to 80 to 100 feet when checking levels at lime silo, above empty tanks, when working in lift stations, and occasionally to climb the water tower.


WORK ENVIRONMENT


1. Outdoor work is required in all sorts of conditions, including inclement weather.


2. Exposed to vibration and loud sounds from operating equipment and vehicles.


3. Maybe around fumes and hazardous chemicals potential exposure to infectious disease.


4. May require work in confined space OK occasionally exposed to potential for electric shock.


5. Noise level can be loud.

Pay: $28.89 - $29.21 per hour
