Veterinary Assistant


Job Supervisor:


The Veterinary Assistant directly reports, but is not limited to, the Veterinary Technician and/or the Attending Veterinarian


Overall Responsibility:


The overall responsibility of the Veterinary Assistant is to help ensure all animals that come under the care of Spay/Neuter Save Network receive the appropriate medical care and compassion while also helping the Veterinarian and Veterinary Technician with tasks as needed.


Main Duties and/or Specific Responsibilities:


  • Providing general care to all animals being cared for in the clinic
  • Restraint of animals for exams, treatments, and inductions of anesthesia
  • Assisting in the admittance and discharge of clinic animals
  • Cleaning of all cages and equipment used in the clinic as needed
  • Preparation of anesthetized animals for surgical procedures
  • Assisting in the recovery of animals from anesthesia
  • Providing treatments to animals requiring them in the clinic
  • Filling prescriptions for medications animals will be going home with
  • Communicating with clients about their animals needs
  • Cleaning and sterilizing surgical instruments/packs
  • Ensuring supplies are properly stocked in exam and surgery rooms
  • Assisting the attending veterinarian or veterinary technician with other tasks as


needed


Qualifications:


A. Education:


1. High School Diploma or GED required


2. Completion of specific Veterinary Assistant Training program preferred, but not required


B. Experience:


1. Experience handling various types of animals strongly desired


2. Experience working in a High/Quality High Volume Spay/Neuter facility and/or Animal Shelter/Rescue preferred, but not required


3. Experience in MASH style clinics a plus


4. Willing to train the right person with the proper motivation


C. Knowledge and Skills:


1. Ability to work in a high-paced and stressful at times environment


2. Great organizational skills required


3. Ability to learn and use basic Computer Record Keeping Software


4. Ability to communicate easily and compassionately with pet owners


5. Ability to work well in a team environment


6. Basic knowledge of a variety of animal species a plus


7. Have physical stamina for 10 hour work days


8. Ability to work well with animals that may be stressed/scared a plus


9. Possess a good sense of discretion when it comes to client information.


10.Ability to lift 50 lbs


Work Schedule:


The work week is composed of four 8-10 hour days Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Some travel will be required for MASH-style spay/neuter clinics on occasional Saturdays.

Spay Neuter Save Network is a 501(c)3 nonprofit veterinary clinic that specializes in High-Quality, High-Volume Spay/Neuter. We offer dentals and non-routine surgeries as well. The Veterinary Assistant plays an important part in our mission to provide care to lower-income residents, keeping pets with their people.


Job Type: Full-time


Pay: $12.00 - $14.00 per hour


Expected hours: 40 per week
