This new part-time Workshop Evening Lead position supports VCU community members in creatively exploring and expressing their ideas and scholarship. The Workshop, the Cabell Library's creative technologies and multimedia center, provides hardware, software, spaces and expertise to help the VCU community produce creative work of all kinds. The Workshop focuses on three main areas:


  • graphics, audio and video projects, through audiovisual equipment lending and audio and video studios
  • the world of hands-on making, through the use of 3D printers, sewing machines, laser cutters, and related equipment

and exploring new and emerging technologies, such as in our Extended Reality and Advanced Media (XRAM) studio that includes virtual reality and motion capture systems



The Workshop Evening Lead, working Sunday-Thursday evenings, takes point on Workshop equipment maintenance and supports student employees who assist library patrons using the studios, a/v equipment, and computer workstations. The incumbent will also sustain a number of other departmental operational tasks. This position reports to the Head, Creative Technologies and Scholarship, and will average 29 hours/week on Sunday - Thursday evenings (such as 5pm-10pm Sundays, 4pm-10pm Mondays-Thursdays) from August - May at The Workshop in Cabell Library, located on the Monroe Park Campus.


Work responsibilities include:


  • Supporting management and maintenance of Workshop creative technologies equipment and deployment of new equipment in coordination with full-time staff; sometimes working with vendor supports, referring complex issues to full-time staff as needed
  • Working alongside of and backstopping student employees to ensure quality customer service for all Workshop patrons including occasional time as substitute at a departmental service desk
  • Ensuring all Workshop services and equipment are operated according to Workshop documentation, library policies, and safety protocols
  • Managing inventory of department resources such as supplies for 3D printers, laser cutter, and a/v equipment
  • Oversight of departmental online request systems to properly schedule or direct those asking for such services as class/group orientations, special individual orientations, and overnight 3D print jobs
  • Taking lead on printing research posters with departmental large-format printer
  • Assisting with software updates for departmental public workstations
  • Maintaining patron records in Alma, VCU Libraries� Integrated Library System, and other systems
  • Helping build a wide-ranging community of makerspace and Workshop users

Making recommendations for equipment purchases and new initiatives

Qualifications:


Required:


  • Customer service experience

Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.



Preferred:


  • Experience maintaining audiovisual and maker equipment or a demonstrated propensity for �tinkeringâ€
  • Experience teaching technologies to audiences of various comfort levels
  • Experience working in an academic setting
  • Experience working in a library environment
