The TRiO Student Support Services Program is a federally-funded program that provides academic, career and personal advising, tutoring, mentoring, and a wide range of activities geared towards the educational enhancement, cultural enrichment, and retention of first- generation, low-income and students with disabilities at the University of Mount Saint Vincent.
A TRiO Student Support Services Advisor assists in the provision of individual and group advising to selected TRiO students. The Advisor provides programming geared to promoting students’ academic success. They conduct academic skills assessment and coursework evaluation. They work with the students to provides support, motivation, and guidance in decision-making. This position reports to the Director for TRiO Student Support Services.
This is a full-time, 12-month grant funded position; continuation of the position is contingent upon grant funding availability.
+ Strong preference for candidates with experience in counseling and/or advising college students
+ Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse student population, both individually and in groups
+ Experience in academic youth programs, non-profits, or higher education, with exposure to crisis intervention and/or advocacy counseling
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills
+ Must be open-minded, non-judgmental, and capable of interacting with and advising diverse groups.
+ Genuine interest in assisting low-income and first-generation college students overcome challenges and succeed
+ Energetic, engaging, and positive personality with the ability to encourage student participation and engagement in the program
+ Willingness to work flexible hours as needed, including on-campus overnight stays during the TRiO summer orientation program
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint, with the ability to learn new computer database systems.
