Position Overview

This position will support a faculty-led research project by assisting with the review and categorization of selected digital materials. This role will include systematically applying a predefined coding scheme to selected news and social media content related to the 2024 presidential elections. The coding process supports the research team in organizing and analyzing media content to identify patterns, themes, and trends. This position requires attention to detail, consistency, and the ability to follow coding protocols accurately.

Job Description

60% - Content Coding


  • Apply established codes to assigned digital content from social media and online news sources. Coding will be conducted in person, following project guidelines and timelines. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential for maintaining coding reliability.


30% - Training and Preparation


  • Participate in in-person training sessions alongside fellow team members and the project supervisor. Training will cover how to apply a predefined coding scheme using a provided codebook. Students must demonstrate proficiency and consistency in applying codes before beginning independent work.


10% - Ongoing Communication and Coordination


  • Maintain regular communication with the project supervisor and team as needed to clarify coding questions, address issues, and ensure consistent application of procedures throughout the project.


Required Qualifications

  • Advanced proficiency in Spanish, with the ability to accurately interpret both Spanish and English content as indicated in application materials.
Preferred Qualifications

----------------------------


  • Interest in media studies, political communication, or related fields.
  • Desire to gain hands-on research experience in media and politics.
  • Prior coursework or experience with media content analysis or quantitative research methods.
  • Familiarity with digital data entry tools such as spreadsheets or survey platforms.


Position Requirements

-------------------------


During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

(1) Student employees are

not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.


(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
