Summary:
A standardized patient is a person trained in a case portrayal to provide a patient’s health history, demonstrate physical exam findings, display emotions and/or other behaviors such as body language in a realistic, repeatable and consistent manner. Once the case portrayal is completed, the SP evaluates a learner’s clinical skills using standardized assessment tools. SPs provide feedback on learners’ communication skills either verbally or as “written feedback.†Standardized patients may work one-on-one with a learner or with a group of learners. They work with all levels of learners from beginning to advanced learners including health care professional students to practicing physicians, nurses and other health care professionals. The simulated patient encounters are designed to enable experiential learning in a safe and professional environment and accurately assess clinical skills performance.
