The Role

Bitly is looking for a

Staff Backend Engineer to develop, improve and expand the services that power all of our products. You will be focused primarily on adding to and improving our feature set while contributing to ongoing efforts around codebase modernization.

You will work closely with the engineering and product teams aligned within distinct areas of ownership. Your team will most likely be named after an animal.

What You Will Do

• Drive technical excellence across teams by mentoring Senior and Mid-level Engineers, fostering a culture of quality, scalability, and innovation.
  
• Advocate for engineering solutions that align with product strategy and measurable business outcomes, influencing roadmaps and cross-functional priorities.
  
• Create, manage, and improve back end services that accurately and efficiently provide clients with the data they need with a variety of tools and languages including, Go, NSQ, MySQL, Memcached and more.
  
• Lead cross-functional engineering initiatives to evolve platform architecture, influence technical direction company-wide, and align distributed teams on scalable systems design.
  
• Translate deep systems knowledge into high-impact architectural decisions and frameworks that enable rapid development and long-term maintainability.
  
• Leverage AI-powered developer tools (e.g., Codex, Cursor, Copilot) to boost team productivity and ensure best practices in code generation, review, and testing.
  

Who You Are

• You have extensive engineering experience with the ability to design robust and scalable services.
  
• You have expertise in one back end language with experience in others.
  
• You have experience mentoring other engineers and a desire to continue doing so.
  
• You have a solid background in writing understandable, testable, and efficient code in a language such as Golang, Python, Java, C# or Node.js.
  
• You stay current with emerging AI technologies and thoughtfully evaluate their applicability to back end systems, engineering workflows, and company-wide initiatives.
  
• You clearly communicate technical concepts and ideas to other engineers and other parts of the organization.
  
• You adapt easily to changing priorities, team structures, and technical directions, maintaining momentum and clarity even in evolving contexts.
  
• You take the initiative in addressing issues or seeking support from fellow team members.
  
• You have experience with and are a proponent of automated testing.
  
• You have experience using a flavor of version control-we use git and Github to collaborate and manage pull requests.

• Experience writing and maintaining APIs.
