Postdoctoral Associate

Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)

Doctoral degree or foreign equivalent. Experience in crystallography, pair distribution function analysis, and multivariate data analysis.

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science or Chemical Engineering. Candidates are expected to have a strong background in quantitative structure analysis based on X-ray scattering data (e.g. powder diffraction, pair distribution function (PDF), single-crystal), preferably with experience in situ/operando characterization and large user facilities such as synchrotrons. Experience in characterization and synthesis of calcium carbonate from an amorphous precursor.

Brief Description of Duties:

The Postdoctoral Associate will assist the Principal Investigator Dr. Karena Chapman in the Department of Chemistry. Please visit the Chapman Materials Research website to learn more about our group. The incumbent will conduct research and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University. The successful incumbent will join the PI's research group at the Department of Chemistry at Stony Brook University. They will perform research to understand the crystallization of calcium carbonate.

We are looking for a highly motivated and creative individual who is interested in developing a mechanistic understanding the function and reactivity of materials using X-ray crystallography and imaging. The candidates must have interest in employing advanced X-ray scattering analysis (PDF, pXRD) to study the fundamental aspects of the structure-reactivity relationships. The postdoctoral fellow should possess good verbal and written communication skills in English, the ability to work productively and independently in a collaborative environment, strong problem-solving skills, and be willing to provide mentorship to junior members of our laboratory. Regular duties will include:

  • X-ray scattering experiments of solution-phase synthesis under reactive conditions using synchrotron- and laboratory-based instruments.

  • Quantitative structural analysis based on powder diffraction and pair distribution function data.

  • Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations.

  • Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies as needed.

  • Mentorship of graduate students and/or undergraduate students.

  • Other duties as assigned, which may include attending Scientific Conferences and Meetings
