Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Physics, Materials Science or a closely related discipline in hand by the start of the appointment.

For material synthesis: Prior experience in single crystal growth (flux, vapor transport, floating-zone, unidirectional solidification, and electrochemical methods) or thin film growth (PLD, MBE, and CVD methods), crystal, and interface structure determination with x-ray diffraction/scattering/spectroscopy, transport and magnetic property characterization using Quantum Design’s MPMS/PPMS and dilution refrigerators.

For 2D materials characterizations: Prior experience in 2D electronic device fabrication and transport measurements in dilution refrigerators and optical spectroscopy.

For quantum information systems: Prior experience in superconducting or quantum dot spin qubit fabrication and characterizations, including the experience in lab setups.

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants must have had at least two first-author papers published in peer-reviewed journals by the time of application, must have excellent written and oral communication skills, be self-motivated and able to work both independently and as a multi-institutional team member, should have a proven ability to disseminate research results by writing manuscripts and giving academic presentations.

The incumbent will conduct research and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University. This researcher will be responsible for setting up QIS materials synthesis laboratory in case of qubit fabrications, designing and growth of quantum materials in the form of single crystals or thin films in case of quantum materials synthesis, performing physics property characterizations using dilution refrigerates, MPMS, PPMS, and x-ray and/or neutron diffraction/scattering techniques. This position also requires the ability to work in a highly collaborative environment with team members having a broad range of scientific and technical backgrounds and levels of experience. In addition, this position will involve training and management of undergraduate or graduate students, development of new proposals, and day-to-day management of laboratories and scientific collaborations. The researcher will be encouraged to lead independent projects resulting in high impact publications. This position is open to all nationalities. Candidates from any country are welcome.

  • Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, conduct research experiments in the field of Quantum Materials Physics.

  • Collect and analyze data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing specialized skills in related field to analyze the collected data.

  • Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations. May also assist in grant writing.

  • Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies as needed.

  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
