The mission of this position is to install, repair, and maintain plumbing and process piping systems in compliance with Federal Regulations, MNCode, and City of Minneapolis Ordinance. The employees in this position are required by the State and the City to hold multiple licenses to perform the required work.


Salary:


The base salary for this position is

$56.89 perhour.


Work Location:


This position is onsite only.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Weld large diameter water mains in open ditches, on elevated bridge decks, and perform confined space entry welds. Weld, fabricate, and maintain hazardous chemical piping systems. Welding on natural gas and propane piping. Suggest and make field adjustments to as-built documents when necessary.
  • Install, maintain, repair, and rebuild valves including gate, plug, and check valves, Air/hydraulic control valves and ancillary devices that are imperative to the function of water and chemical delivery systems for production, processing, pumping, and delivery of potable water.
  • Install temporary water mains and modify building plumbing to accommodate a connection to all buildings and residences that are impaired during water main rehabilitation and replacement projects.
  • Perform and thoroughly document cross connection control surveys on customer properties in a courteous and professional manner for the division. Make recommendations to management on corrective action following the survey and follow up on completion of recommendations.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on anhydrous ammonia and liquid chlorine delivery and metering systems. Document all activities and ensure the proper regulatory paperwork have been submitted to management.
  • Test, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and rebuild backflow assemblies for the protection of the public potable water supply system; RPZ, Double check valve, PRV�s both in the water treatment plants and the distribution system. Sign and submit all regulatory paperwork required for backflow testing.
  • Perform HAZMAT response when required or related to chemical piping systems
  • Provide data and suggest improvements to develop processes and procedures to effectively manage equipment asset life in a Computer Maintenance Management System. (Maximo)
  • Follow stringent procedures for the sanitation, chlorination, neutralization, and sampling of potable water supply systems. Document chain of custody and results.
  • Construct, maintain, sanitize, and install mobile potable water stations and stationary potable water fountains for the TAPMPLS program.
  • Maintain all appropriate individual licenses and required continuing education to comply with recognized standards and statutes.


WORKING CONDITIONS:


Work below grade, work requiring full body harness and tie off. Repair and maintain dangerous chemical systems including chlorine, ammonia, hydrochloric acid and fluoride. Repair and maintain high pressure air, water and hydraulic systems. Exposure to noise, extreme heat, cold and vibration.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION:


High school diploma and post high school training or equivalent and experience to qualify for Minnesota Journeyman Plumbing license and hold a Minneapolis Certificate of Competency Plumbing/Gas.


MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:


One year of experience as a Journeyman Plumber while performing RPZ inspections.

The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps:

a rating of relevant education and experience and/or an oral examination (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.


Background Check


The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.


Drug and Alcohol Testing


All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.


Medical Exam


After a conditional job offer, candidates will be required to pass a medical examination which includes a physical screening.

This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between the City of Minneapolis and the [

Eligible List Statement


The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire three months after it has been established.


Interview Selection


The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate’s education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.

  • Considerable knowledge installing complex piping systems utilizing a variety of materials and joining methods.
  • Ability to do tack and fusion welding.
  • Ability to read and work from blue prints and schematic.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use Microsoft Office products.
  • Experience working alone or with a team as part of a large project.
  • Experience coordinating their work with the work of other trades.
