JOB SUMMARY


The Surgical Physician Assistant at North Mississippi Health Services is responsible for delivering surgical services under physician supervision, focusing on patient care, education, and recordkeeping. This role requires a diverse set of skills and abilities to effectively support trauma surgeons and medical teams during critical procedures, ability to think and act swiftly in high-pressure situations, understanding of trauma care protocols and procedures, and the capacity to remain calm and composed in stressful and emotionally charged environments. These abilities are essential for ensuring the highest level of care and support in a Tier 2 trauma setting.


JOB FUNCTIONS


Patient Care:


  • Promotes and maintains health by providing surgical services under the supervision of a Physician.
  • Provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventative health care services in accordance with Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure (MSBML), approved protocols, and national standards of practice.
  • Complex and simple wound closure. Wound vac management: application and removal and appropriate ordering of devices
  • First and second assist in OR
  • Clinic visits for seeing post op follow-ups, ER follow-ups, and new patient referrals
  • Provides continuity of care by developing and implementing patient management plans.


Patient Education:

  • Provides instruction and counsel regarding medical care matters and issues to patient/family member.
  • Performs pre and post op rounds
  • Write progress notes and discharge summaries
  • Serves as a resource for community agencies, as needed.


Recordkeeping:

  • Ensures timely and accurate (as established by policy) system documentation of patient status and patient care activities including treatments, procedures, and medications prescribed.


Documentation:
  • Ensures timely and accurate documentation of patient status and patient care activities including treatments, procedures, and medications prescribed
  • Viewing and interpreting xrays, CT scans, and MRIs
  • Ordering and interpreting labs


Continuing Education:

  • Ensures clinical competence by staying abreast of changes in medical management.
  • Maintains board certification.
  • Completes annual CME required programs.
  • Participates in a variety of healthcare education activities.


Regulatory:

  • Adheres to NMHS/NMMCI Policies/Procedures/Guidelines.


Complies with applicable State/Federal/Regulatory Policies/Procedures/Guidelines/Laws.

  • QUALIFICATIONS


Education
  • Master's Degree in health-related or science field. Required


Licenses and Certifications
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • DEA - Narcotics License
  • CRNFA - Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant


Work Experience
  • 1-3 years. Minimum of 3 years clinical experience. Required


Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational and communication (written and verbal)skills; required
  • Provide care to patients ranging from neonate to geriatric; required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; required
  • Responsible for a wide variety of patient care activities
  • Ability to work without close supervision
  • Ability exercise autonomy in medical decisions as determined by supervising Physician
  • Organize multiple tasks and maintain control of work flow
  • Must have extensive contact with: Physicians, Nurses, patients, family members, and other NMMC Staff members
  • Must be able to effectively communicate (verbally and in writing) complex medical issues
  • Must reflect a professional, caring attitude toward patients, staff and the public we serve
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment
