The Phlebotomy interns will support patient care by assisting in the selection of effective specimen collection methods and helping to ensure samples are properly prepared for laboratory testing, while also learning from experienced team members and expanding their clinical skills. This internship provides students with the opportunity to become familiar with phlebotomy practices in a fast-paced oncology clinic. The primary goal is to gain hands-on experience in a clinical environment, allowing students to apply their knowledge and refine essential skills in blood sample collection. Through direct patient interaction, sample labeling, and proper specimen storage, interns will build confidence and prepare for a career in phlebotomy or other healthcare fields.

• Verifies test requisitions; bringing discrepancies to the attention of ordering provider
  
• Verifies patient by asking patient to identify themselves with name and date of birth
  
• Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures
  
• Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures
  
• Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, entering draw information into EMR and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed
  
• Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes
  
• Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations
  
• Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders
  
• Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations
  
• Serves and protects the clinic by adhering to professional standards, laboratory policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and COLA standards
  
• Monitors supplies and puts away stock as needed
  
• Giving post-procedure instructions, such as keeping pressure on the site or avoiding certain activities after a bone marrow procedure
  
• Organizes work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling; sorting specimens; checking labeling; logging specimens; arranging reports for delivery; keeping work surfaces clean and orderly
  
• Ability to result waived laboratory testing on patient samples under the supervision of a technologist
  
• Performs all other duties assigned by supervisor
  

• High school diploma/GED required
  
• Ability to connect with patients and make them feel comfortable
  
• Knowledge of legal requirements regarding drawing blood, handling fluid samples and use of relevant medical equipment and material.
  
• Phlebotomy training and knowledge of venipuncture techniques
  

• Hands-on experience in specimen collection, handling, and processing techniques.
  
• Exposure to laboratory operations and best practices in patient care and safety.
