ECU Health Medical Center, one of four academic medical centers in North Carolina, is the 974-bed flagship hospital for ECU Health and serves as the primary teaching hospital for The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Position Summary


Performs patient registration. Provides insurance benefits interpretation and counseling. Maintains medical terminology skills and knowledge of third party payer regulations. Performs patient and customer relations. Completes other duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements


High School or equivalent (GED) or higher is required.


Associate Degree: preferred


Bachelors Degree: preferred


2 years Customer Service is required


1 to 2 years of Registration and/or Billing experience within a healthcare setting is preferred.


Excellent communication (both written and oral), detail orientation, organization, and multitasking skills required.


Basic computer skills

This position is for a Referral Coordinator who will manage incoming and outgoing patient referrals, ensuring timely access to care and smooth communication between providers, specialists, patients, and insurance companies. This role is vital to care continuity, handling insurance verifications, appointment coordination, and accurate EMR documentation.


Key Responsibilities:


Process referrals per protocol and timeline.


Verify insurance and authorization requirements.


Coordinate and schedule appointments with providers and patients.


Monitor referral status and follow up as needed.


Document all referral activity in the EMR (EPIC).


Communicate updates and instructions to patients.


Maintain daily work queues and support departmental goals.


Ensure HIPAA compliance and collaborate with the care team.


Assist with front office or scheduling tasks as needed.


Shift Information:- Monday-Friday, 8a-5p, additional hours would be based on the clinic needs
