Part-Time Lifeguard-Indoor Pool

We're currently hiring four (4) Part Time Lifeguards for the Portsmouth Indoor Pool.

Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 5:30am-9:30am (additional hours may be available)
Hours: 8-10 hours per week
Pay rate: $18.00 per hour
NATURE OF WORK
The purpose of this position is to perform professional work in the safety and use of the Portsmouth Indoor Pool. Monitors activities in aquatic areas to prevent accidents and provide assistance to patrons while performing directly related work as required. Maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other City employees and the public.SUPERVISION
Work is performed under the direction of the Pool Supervisor, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Maintains order at facility; including enforcing rules and resolving minor conflicts.

2. Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; recognize and respond to an emergency in under 30 seconds and secure safety of patron in the event of an emergency.

3. Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.

4. Accident prevention where adherence to pool rules is required.

5. Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service.

6. Respond to patron questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.

7. Front desk operations; will be trained by supervisor to use point of sale system, answering phone calls, taking registrations, and collection of payments (cash, checks, and credit card).

8. Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.

9. Prepares and maintains appropriate activity reports.

10. Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.

11. Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.

12. Attends meetings, and in-service training sessions to become or remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas.
13. Monitor water quality of the pool & spa by using chemical testing kit in according with NH public bathing code. Report to supervisor or Certified Pool Operator, if water testing is out of range.

14. Perform related work as required.

1. Knowledge of First Aid and water rescue practices and techniques; CPR and AED.

2. Ability to swim to a depth of 12 feet.

3. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.

4. Ability to follow oral and written orders, directions, and instructions and abides by the rules and regulations of the department.

5. Ability to multi-task.

6. Ability to work safely in changing work environments both inside and outside including exposure to chemicals.

7. Ability to lead and instruct others in techniques and methods used in various work activities.

8. Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.

9. Ability to write reports and maintain accurate records.
10. Ability to perform all tasks assigned, in a reasonable amount of time, with a positive attitude. It is imperative to a successful crew that all team members work well together and provide support for each other.

11.Ability to communicate effectively with the general public, City staff, and government officials at all levels.ENVIRONMENT, WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT
Work is performed inside under variable temperature conditions and noise level, both indoors as well as around chemical and/or fumes. Physical requirements include ability to work long hours, many of which can be on your feet. Lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force from time to time and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to review a wide variety of materials in electronic or hard copy form. Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate a personal computer, telephone and related equipment. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to perform water rescue procedures in an aquatic facility environment. Ability to work under physically and emotionally stressful situations. Through knowledge of swimming, water safety skills and techniques and related activities. Good physical condition and stamina.MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is required for this position.Applicants for this position should have some experience in aquatic facility activities or equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform work.(The above descriptions are illustrative.
