Operations Engineering Superintendent

The Operations Engineering Superintendent reports to the Operations Manager and is responsible for supervising the Unit Process Engineers and providing sound technical service and expertise aimed at enhancing safety and profitability of the Lake Charles Refinery.

Supports process unit and project PHAs by participating in the Hazards analysis, where needed, and by providing critical review of action items to confirm their validity

Leads incident investigations, where needed, particularly where process unit operations are the focus of the incident.

Mentor incident investigation to unit process engineers to ensure their development as future investigation leads

Responsible for validation of safe operating limits

Supports refinery safety by participating in risk analysis meetings, where needed

Ensures refinery safety policies are followed when external (guest) process consultants are used to diagnose process problems or to provide advice for process operations

Supervise an organization of approximately 4 process engineers

Develops technical and leadership abilities of the unit process engineers

Develops and manages the Operations Engineering budget

Monitors technology advances in the refining industry

Performs and/or assists in economic studies to determine the best course of action in choosing between alternatives

Stewards Process Engineers’ work processes including unit monitoring, reports, presentations and memos

Informs BTLs and managers of work progress on Unit Process Engineering Group issues

Works with Operations and OP&E departments to develop refinery operating plans

Coordinates efforts with the Technical Department and Maintenance Department to resolve refinery reliability issues and increase operating capability

Manages and reviews engineering work requests from unit process engineering

Provides input to developing projects and identifies opportunities for future projects

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical Engineering

5 or more years of Unit Process Engineer experience

1 or more years of Supervisory experience

Ability to troubleshoot operational and process quality problems

work outside in harsh weather conditions

work near large, hot, high-speed machines

work around chemicals, including acids and bases

wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)

The Lake Charles Refinery is located in Westlake, Louisiana. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. Facilities also include a specialty coker and calciner. The refinery processes a mixture of light to heavy, low- and high sulfur and low- and high-acid crude oils. It receives domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil through truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals, including the Beaumont and Clifton Ridge terminals and the Bayou Bridge Pipeline. Lake Charles produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include off-road diesel, home heating oil, feedstock for our Excel Paralubes joint venture, specialty graphite petroleum coke and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed in the southeastern and eastern United States by truck, rail car, barge or pipelines and exported to Latin America and West Africa.
