MEDIA ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION
An employee in this class performs routine tasks in the areas of clerical, technical, instructional
support, and circulation of materials to students and staff. The employee also provides ongoing
support to teachers and students (K-12) using resources in the school library media center. When
working directly with patrons, the media assistant must be able to respond effectively to their
needs. The employee provides hardware and software support to students and staff. Tasks include
minor troubleshooting of technical problems such as logging on to computer systems or software,
printing malfunctions, or routine error messages. In some cases, the employee will research
appropriate resources to find answers. If standard techniques do not resolve the situation, the
employee will seek assistance from the appropriate technical professional. The media assistant
carries out all tasks under the direction of the professional members of the school’s media tech
staff, reporting, as appropriate, to administrators and the media coordinator.
Clerical Responsibilities
? Assume general clerical responsibilities.
? Circulate print and non-print materials.
? Sorts, retrieves, and re-shelves media materials and equipment; ensures materials are kept
in an orderly manner; searches for missing books.
? Cares for media center materials; including shelving materials.
? Assists in the inventory of media center materials.
? Perform other clerical duties as assigned
Technical Responsibilities
? Assists with preparation, distribution, and management of student technological devices.
? Provide timely resolution of computer problems by providing assistance or referral.
? Perform preventive equipment maintenance, minor repairs, and other technical support
responsibilities as assigned.
? Tasks include minor troubleshooting problems such as logging onto computer
systems/claiming NC Ed Cloud accounts or software, printing malfunctions, or routine
error messages.
? The employee provides hardware and software support to patrons. In some cases, the
employee will research appropriate resources to find answers. If standard techniques do
not resolve the situation, the employee will seek assistance from the appropriate technical
professional.
Instructional Support Responsibilities
? Assist students and staff with location and use of digital and print materials and equipment
? Provide support for reference and research activities
? Pull materials and resources for teachers
? Prepare displays (bulletin boards), through the use of poster makers and laminating
machines.
? Supervise Media Center environment for general use, including staffing the circulation
desk and answering the phone.
? Adheres to copyright as well as other laws and guidelines pertaining to the distribution and
use of resources.
? Works cooperatively with other libraries and agencies to share resources that enhance
teaching and learning.
? Interacts effectively with students, staff, administration, and the general public to promote
and expand the school library media program.
? Provides basic instruction and guidance to students using educational computer hardware
and software.
? Advocates the principles of intellectual freedom and ethical behavior.
? Demonstrates professional integrity through ethical behavior.
? Perform other instructional support responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
? General knowledge of computers, information technology devices, and software packages
utilized in the school library media center.
? General knowledge of business English, proficient in grammar and spelling along with basic
math skills to include using percentages.
? Proficiency with word processing, basic office applications, and online searching.
? Competency in basic clerical procedures such as filing, sorting, organizing, shelving,
recordkeeping, inventory, and accounting.
? Ability to operate standard office machines, data processing, audio-visual equipment, and
media center machines.
? Ability to adhere to prescribed routines.
? Deal with frequent interruptions with adaptability/flexibility.
? General knowledge of computers and various operating systems (Apple, Google,
Microsoft).
? Competency with a variety of word processing and other basic office applications (Apple,
Google, Microsoft).
? General knowledge of information technology devices.
? General knowledge of software packages utilized by the school district.
? Competency in online searching and use of the Internet.
? Ability to communicate with users to determine the nature of assistance needed
? Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
? Ability to problem solve independently most minor problems; schedule activities and/or
meetings; gather and/or collate data.
? Ability to perform multiple tasks at the same time to meet changing job conditions.
? Changing job conditions may require upgraded skills to meet the evolving needs of the
library community.
SUGGESTED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
? Associate’s degree or higher from an Institution of Higher Education or 48 semester hours
completed toward a degree from an Institution of Higher Education.
? Applicants must possess knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with students of all ages.
? Experience in office clerical procedures and the use of computer and information
technology resources.
? An equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required
knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
? Significant standing; some walking, moving, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching,
handling, pushing, and pulling. Ability to lift 25 lbs.
