TXDOT's Materials and Tests Division is looking for a Material/Process Inspector I, II, or III based at the Stassney campus. This position will be for MTD Sections Rigid Pavements and Concrete Materials.

Position Description Material/Process Inspector I:


Performs material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.


Material/Process Inspector II:


Performs material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.


Material/Process Inspector III:


Performs complex material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.


Essential Duties:


Material/Process Inspector I:


  • Conducts pavement evaluations in the field.
  • Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors and material producers and suppliers.
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • Performs tests and inspection duties.
  • Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.
  • Secures, logs in and prepares samples of raw materials or manufactured materials at various states of production for testing.


Material/Process Inspector II:


  • Handles material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors.
  • Prepares and maintains inspection or test reports and issues material reports.
  • Coordinates core drill or auger rig operations.
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of test supplies.
  • Performs tests and inspection duties.
  • Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement
  • Secures, logs in and prepares samples of raw materials or manufactured materials at various stages of production for testing.


Material/Process Inspector III:


  • Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors, material producers and suppliers and field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
  • Orders equipment and supplies.
  • Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.
  • Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management.
  • COnducts pavement evaluations in the field.
  • Coordinates core drill or auger rig operations.
  • Handles material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors.
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of test supplies.
  • Performs tests and inspection duties.
  • Prepares and maintains inspection or test reports and issues material reports.
  • Secures, logs in and prepares samples of raw materials or manufactured materials at various stages of production for testing.
  • Drives/travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs.
Minimum Qualifications:


Material/Process Inspector I:


Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.


Experience: No experience required (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).


Material/Process Inspector II:


Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.


Experience: 1 year of experience in laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications


Material/Process Inspector III:


Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.


Experience: 2 years of experience in laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications


Licenses and Certifications:


  • Valid driver�s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • ACI Cncrt Fld Test Tech-Grd I
  • ACI Cncrt Strength Test Tech


Other Conditions:


  • Must have or obtain the required licenses or certifications listed above within twelve (12) months of date of hire.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:


Material/Process Inspector I:


  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to vibration
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
  • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position


Material/Process Inspector II:


All the above and:


  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Close Visual Acuity-using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts
  • Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills

  • All the above
