All positions at the public education department are based in Santa Fe however some may operate through our Albuquerque office based on home address and space availability.

The Office of Special Education will provide supports to districts, parents and SWDs to ensure outcomes of a free appropriate public education for students protected under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). We will review data to make decisions that will impact support for SWDs to meet college and career ready standards through equitable access to rigorous courses, high-quality instruction, and appropriate supports.


Why does the job exist?


This position exists to conduct special education compliance monitoring and enforcement as required by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Part B; monitor corrective action as need and perform duties associated with low incidence disabilities.


How does it get done?


Conduct compliance monitoring and enforcement by examining local education agency (LEA) data submissions


Provide targeted technical assistance Initiate and monitor general supervision corrective action


Process and approve annual sub-recipient grant awards


Assist fiscal operations with the program portion of request for re-reimbursements


Assist fiscal operations with the program portion of budget adjustment requests


Conduct duties associated with the specialty of low incidence, to resources associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Students with disabilities and their parents are the principle customers. Other stake-holders include local education agencies, internal customers up to and including the New Mexico Public Education Department's Secretary of Education.

Minimum Qualification


Bachelor's degree in Education, Public Administration, or Business Administration and four (4) years of experience as a teacher and/or program administrator. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.


Employment Requirements


Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico's Driver's License.


Working Conditions


Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some occasional travel is required for meetings and conferences.
