Southern Cancer Center is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Lab Assistant to join our Huntsville team. Scope of Role:


Under direct supervision, the Lab Assistant is responsible for collecting and processing patient specimens, performing basic analysis, maintaining lab equipment, and supporting patient flow. This role plays a vital part in ensuring accurate and timely lab results while upholding safety and compliance standards.

Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities:


  • Collect specimens from patients as ordered
  • Document and maintain records per quality assurance protocols
  • Perform basic specimen analysis (chemistry, hematology, immunology)
  • Maintain inventory and ensure viability of lab supplies
  • Assist with testing procedures and send out specimens to reference labs
  • Process incoming lab orders and chart results accurately and promptly
  • Coordinate blood product transfusions as ordered
  • Operate and maintain lab equipment per CLIA guidelines
  • Perform routine instrument maintenance and log control data
  • Follow safety and OSHA compliance procedures, including proper disposal of hazardous materials
  • Support phlebotomy and sample collection as needed
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and staff information


Qualifications:

Qualifications:


  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • 0-3 years of relevant experience (entry-level position)
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment


Physical Demands:


  • Full range of body motion including manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination
  • Ability to sit/stand for extended periods and lift up to 40 lbs
  • Normal vision, color perception, and hearing required
  • Exposure to blood/body fluids, chemicals, and infectious agents


Work Environment:


  • Direct patient contact with potential exposure to hazardous materials
  • Use of laboratory equipment including glassware, needles, and open flames
  • Fast-paced clinical setting with a strong focus on safety and compliance
