Journey Level Lineworker

Description:

The Journey Level Lineworker is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and removal of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems in accordance with Division standards and safety protocols. This position plays a critical role in responding to emergency outages and after-hours calls, performing fault location, system restoration, and equipment operation in a timely and professional manner. The Lineworker ensures system integrity through the inspection, operation, and troubleshooting of transformers, meters, and switching gear, while also supporting public safety through line clearance, training outreach, and accurate locates for construction projects. This role requires effective communication, teamwork, and a commitment to continuous learning and public service.

Wage: $56.01 per hour for the first six months; increases to $58.96 per hour thereafter.

• Installs, maintains, repairs and removes overhead and underground distribution lines in accordance with systems and Division standards.
  
• Responds to emergency calls, operating equipment as required; responds to after-hours call outs within 45 minutes.
  
• Locates faulted primary and secondary cable and lines, and repairs and restores to original or upgrading state upon completion of maintenance; ensures compliance with Division standards.
  
• Locates energized primary and secondary lines and cables for private entities, other departments, and customers involved in construction and pre-construction preparations.
  
• Pulls wire and connects transformers; erects and sets poles, sets meter sockets, transformers, and switching gear; troubleshoots issues related to these operations.
  
• Terminates all classes of lines, transformers, and meters.
  
• Installs, maintains repairs, operates, and reads all functions of switching and other equipment, system wide.
  
• Clears right-of-ways of all obstructions for installation and maintenance of lines.
  
• Inspects substation records, and conducts monthly maintenance checks for abnormal conditions.
  
• Operates a wide range of heavy and light equipment to conduct the needed tasks associated with installation, replacement, and maintenance of lines.
  
• Responds to emergency calls and coordinates personnel during power outages operating equipment as required.
  
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with citizens and co-workers.
  
• Responsible for stand-by rotation and after hour call outs.
  
• Conducts training and awareness presentations concerning power line safety for other departments within the City as well as the public at large as assigned.
  
• Attends training and educational programs to remain current of latest equipment and technology.
  
• Other duties and responsibilities as required.
  

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

The work environment for this position is primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind. The position involves working near high-voltage electrical equipment and systems, often at elevated heights using bucket trucks, ladders, or climbing gear, and may require entering confined or excavated spaces. The Lineworker must operate heavy equipment and power tools, frequently lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 75 pounds. This position requires physical stamina, manual dexterity, and situational awareness to ensure safety in potentially hazardous conditions. The role includes rotational on-call duty and response to after-hours emergencies, sometimes under pressure or in low-visibility situations. Work is performed in a team-oriented environment with frequent interaction with the public and coordination with other City departments.

Requirements:

• Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent
  
• Requires a four (4) year Electrical Journey-level Lineworker apprenticeship
  
• Requires an Electrical Journey-level Lineworker certification
  
• Requires a valid Colorado Commercial Driver�s License
  
• Requires First Aid and CPR certification or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
  
• Requires the following ICS Certifications: IS100 & IS700 or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
  
• Considerable knowledge of electric distribution system construction and maintenance,
  
• Considerable knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in construction, maintenance and troubleshooting of overhead and underground electric distribution and substation systems.
  
• Considerable knowledge of principles of electrical theory as applied to power systems.
  
• Considerable knowledge of transformer and other equipment connections for various applications.
  
• Considerable knowledge of applicable electrical codes and regulations, such as the NESC (National Electric Code), etc.
  
• Considerable knowledge of the necessary precautions in working high-voltage lines.
  
• Considerable knowledge of safe work practices and procedures including first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  

• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write complex reports and distill information for many audiences.
  
• This position requires close, distance and peripheral vision.
  
• Ability to hear an average conversational voice in a quiet room, using one or both ears, at a distance of six (6) feet. Ability to hear sounds and signals indicating work and safety necessities.
  
• This position requires standing, walking and sitting for periods of time. Utilization of hands and fingers to operate office computer keyboard and equipment required. Must be able to reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel or crouch if needed.
  
• Must be able to lift up to seventy-five (75) pounds as needed and frequently lift up to twenty (20) pounds.
  
• This position requires effective proficiency in the use of computer software and applications, office equipment, and professional telephone use. The ability to adequately type quickly with few to no errors is also very important. This position will often require multi-tasking in the use of computer, phone, and office equipment while interacting with clients. Candidates for this position may be required to take and pass technology proficiency assessments prior to employment.
