Position Overview


The Virtual School Paraprofessional supports students enrolled in online courses by providing consistent supervision, encouragement, and academic support within the in-person virtual learning lab at Midland High School. While this position does not involve direct instruction, it plays a critical role in helping students stay on track, build independent learning habits, and effectively navigate the virtual learning environment. The paraprofessional serves as a point of contact for students and families and works collaboratively with instructors and staff to promote student success.


Assignment Functions and Responsibilities


The job is not limited to any or all of the following functions and responsibilities:

Academic & Virtual Learning Support


  • Assist students with logging into the Learning Management System (LMS) and navigating their virtual courses.
  • Monitor daily student activity and weekly progress, helping students remain on pace to complete their courses on time.
  • Support students in interpreting assignment expectations and instructor feedback.
  • Encourage time management, goal setting, and self-directed learning habits.
  • Connect students with teachers, counselors, or support staff when content-specific or additional help is needed.
  • Troubleshoot minor technical issues and assist students in accessing tech support resources when necessary.
  • Track participation and attendance; maintain accurate records and reports as needed.

Student Support & Environment


  • Supervise and support students in the in-person virtual learning lab throughout the day.
  • Establish and maintain a calm, supportive, and structured environment conducive to independent learning.
  • Build strong, respectful relationships with students and encourage academic confidence and accountability.
  • Support students in developing personal responsibility, focus, and readiness for post-secondary success.
  • Provide positive guidance to students in a manner that communicates dignity and respect.
  • Assist with personal care needs as required.

Communication & Collaboration


  • Act as a liaison between students, online instructors, school staff, and families.
  • Communicate with instructors and administrators regarding student progress, challenges, or concerns.
  • Document communication and student support interactions using appropriate school systems.
  • Participate in team meetings or planning sessions related to student progress and program development.
  • Work professionally with staff, students, parents, and other providers.

Additional Responsibilities


  • Demonstrate proven organization and time management skills.
  • Maintain dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to explain curriculum expectations following directives from teachers.
  • Basic understanding of technology relevant to virtual learning environments.
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, and walk frequently throughout the day.
  • Some lifting may be required.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of behavioral management techniques.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate�s Degree preferred.
  • Experience working with youth or in an educational environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn online learning platforms and school-based systems.
  • Ability to build rapport with students and maintain a positive, professional presence.
  • Organized, dependable, and able to follow established procedures and routines.
