Emergency Vehicle Technician

Position Summary


The Emergency Vehicle Technician is responsible for the installation, programming, and testing of emergency warning products and equipment in emergency and utility vehicles. This role ensures all work is performed in compliance with company policies, safety procedures, and environmental regulations while delivering high-quality, turnkey vehicle upfitting solutions.


Key Responsibilities


  • Install emergency warning equipment and upfitting products according to technical drawings, schematics, and job requirement sheets.
  • Perform basic programming, testing, and troubleshooting of installed equipment to ensure proper functionality.
  • Inspect vendor-supplied and manufactured parts for defects or malfunctions, reporting any issues to the Supervisor.
  • Remove and reinstall body panels, bumpers, and trim components to facilitate equipment installation.
  • Install specialized vehicle upfitting components, including:
  • Emergency lighting and radios, K-9 kennels and prisoner transport partitions
  • Back racks, Tommy Gates, toolboxes, push bumpers and other utility equipment
  • Review build sheets before installation to verify all required components are available.
  • Ensure vehicles are road-ready upon completion, including removal of tools, debris, and handprints from the vehicle�s exterior.
  • Maintain an organized and clean workstation, storing tools properly at the end of each shift.
  • Participate in all required training programs, including those from product manufacturers
  • Monitor inventory and restock wire spools as needed, notifying the Parts Coordinator when supplies run low.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Complete necessary paperwork and documentation related to vehicle upfitting and timekeeping.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Required Skills & Qualifications


  • Intermediate knowledge of automotive electrical systems and vehicle wiring.
  • Proficiency with power tools and hand tools, including drills, wrenches, staple guns, gauges, and vises.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and technical specifications.
  • Experience working with small, color-coded wiring components.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to fabricate custom installations when necessary.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced setting.


Physical Requirements


  • Ability to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working in varying environmental conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Manual dexterity for wiring, soldering, and assembling small components.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs frequently and 30 lbs regularly.
  • Tolerance for exposure to different odors and fumes associated with vehicle upfitting.


Education & Experience


  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience installing automotive warning equipment (e.g., emergency lighting, mobile radios, GPS systems, antennas, or similar electrical components)
  • Must possess a valid driver�s license with a clean driving record.
  • Five (5) years of experience in a warehouse or distribution environment is preferred.
  • EVT certification a plus
  • Training available for the right candidate
