To perform all required blast hole drilling including handling and loading of explosives. Must have at least EQ1 status to be eligible for bid.


  • The driller powderman must pass a U. S. Department of Justice background check to be an employee possessor of a Federal explosives licensee. Handling explosives will be done under the supervision of a California State licensed blaster.
  • A driller powderman has three years after accepting the position to become a California State licensed blaster.
  • The driller powderman must be knowledgeable in the storage, transportation, and handling of explosives as per federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • The proposed drilling area must be thoroughly examined for cracked and unstable ground conditions which may result in slope failure or rock fall.
  • After blasting the area, blasted area will be thoroughly examined for misfires or explosive cut-offs and only giving the all-clear once issues have been resolved.
  • Keeps work area in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  • To control access, it is the driller powderman�s responsibility to insure that the entrance to the drill and blast area is barricaded and the hazards are posted.
  • A walk around inspection must be completed before a piece of equipment can be operated. Any mechanical deficiencies must be reported. This inspection must be documented and submitted to mine management daily.
  • Makes necessary operating reports concerning explosives, inventory, holes shot, drill footage, etc.
  • To become familiar and knowledgeable on the inner workings and functions of the GPS system. All drill holes and blast patterns are to be completed as per management specifications.
  • To become efficient in the safe operation of a �top hammer†and �down the hole hammer†system for drilling. This includes being knowledgeable of drill oils, lubricants and filters consumed by the drill, proper operation of an air compressor, and safe environmental controls for the operator.
  • Perform other EQ duties as assigned.
  • Aware of restrictions with regards to design, as well as maintaining design constraints such as face heights, bench widths, permitting boundaries, etc.
