POSITION SUMMARY


The Director of Risk and HR Operations is a key leadership role in a small, publicly traded company with a fully remote workforce based in California. In our nimble company of fewer than 50 employees, the Director of Risk and HR Operations must operate as both strategist and hands-on executor-overseeing risk, HR, compliance, corporate insurance, vendor relationships, and general corporate operations. The role demands strong working knowledge of California employment law, contract and regulatory compliance, and Workers’ Compensation-adjacent frameworks, combined with the flexibility to build and manage practical systems that work for a lean, distributed team. This role would be an excellent launchpad for candidates coming to the role with HR leadership experience looking to expand into more general risk management practice.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Human Resources (HR) Management


· Recruitment & Hiring: Lead full-cycle recruitment and hiring processes in a remote environment. Draft, maintain, and update job descriptions. Guide hiring managers in equitable and compliant selection practices.


· Policy Development & Supervisory Support: Create and maintain HR policies. Advise supervisory staff on employee relations, leaves, wage-and-hour compliance, and best practices. Monitor policy compliance, ensure proper documentation of HR and personnel actions.


· Compensation & Benefits: Develop and maintain pay scales. Coordinate benefits and open enrollment. Communicate benefit information. Coordinate payroll operations with the accounting department.


· Training & Compliance: Administer California-required HR trainings. Maintain training records. Ensure compliance in onboarding and offboarding processes.


· HR Systems & Operations: Maintain HR systems and personnel records. Administer onboarding and offboarding processes. Ensure delivery of required notices.


· Leave & Time Management: Manage FMLA, CFRA, PDL, etc., for remote employees. Ensure compliance with timekeeping and wage-and-hour rules.


· Wage & Hour Advisement: Provide guidance on classification, overtime, compensation. Ensure payroll compliance in collaboration with Payroll department.


· Workers’ Compensation: Oversee injury reporting, coordinate with claims administrators. Ensure required notices and follow-up care.


Risk Management & Insurance


· Manage corporate insurance policies: general liability, professional liability, cyber, workers’ compensation, E&O, and D&O.


· Identify and mitigate legal, operational, and reputational risks.


· Maintain incident logs and lead internal investigations where necessary.


IT & Vendor Oversight


· Liaise with IT vendor-partners. Ensure infrastructure supports remote work and security needs.


· Administrate existing security awareness training programs and implement improvements.


· Collect, review, and maintain vendor vetting and compliance documentation: IT security, licenses, certificates, insurance, and contract terms.


Legal & Compliance Support


· Support Chief Legal Counsel in contract drafting, review, and enforcement.


· Participate in internal compliance, public company, privacy, and data security obligations. Serve as Chief Privacy Officer for relevant purposes.


· Maintain corporate registrations, manage registered agent services, and support legal compliance activities.


Employee Experience & Recognition


Maintain and expand programs that support employee engagement and supportive team culture in a remote environment. Coordinate recognition efforts for life milestones, company anniversaries, and crises with empathy and consistency.


QUALIFICATIONS


· Preferred qualifications: JD/ legal background, Risk Management Certifications or relevant degrees (e.g., ARM, CRM, CISRM, SHRM, RMI-RMP, MBA with Risk Management Focus).


· 5+ years of experience in HR, risk management, legal/compliance, or operations roles.


· Deep familiarity with California employment law, contracts, and public company obligations and successfully applying knowledge to business scenarios.


· Demonstrated success using resourceful problem-solving; creating, maintaining, and documenting company-wide procedures and systems; enforcing consistent policies and practice; and ethical achievement of company goals.


· Demonstrated experience managing risk across departments and areas; balancing business objectives with risk mitigation; and clearly presenting risk options and advisement to other organization leaders.


· Strong judgment, organization, and the ability to work independently.


· Versatile leadership skills that positively influence a strong company culture of teamwork, cooperative efficiency, and appreciation to minimize risk and maximize effectiveness of company efforts.


· Self-motivated, highly responsible, methodical work style.


· Ability to create appropriate systems for a small, distributed workforce.


· Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams, Outlook, Sharepoint, and more.


· Proficiency in general computer use and technology.


· Professional and effective communication skills, both verbal and written


· Superior presentation skills.


· Ability to work independently, analyze information, problem solve, and meet deadlines.

Job Type: Full-time


Pay: $115,000.00 - $124,000.00 per year
