This is a permanent full-time position with benefits and a twenty-year retirement. Shifts are four days on three days off with variable hours (shifts may vary or be altered due to vacation, sick leave, training, and extenuating circumstances). The days and hours depend on the current shift available. The shift open may require you to work afternoons, nights, and weekends. Vacation and sick leave are offered. The wage is $23.37/hr with afternoon and night differential pay. 1% longevity pay per year of service to the office.

Qualifications: Have a High School Diploma or Equivalent. Have a valid Montana Driver's License. Pass a Criminal Background check, Drug test, and Driving Record Check. Must reside in the County of Custer County, within 20 miles of Miles City, any candidates living 20 miles outside of Miles City but within Custer County will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Requirements After Employment: All requirements and classes will be set up through the employer. All that is required of you is your willingness, competence, determination, and flexibility to complete them when they become available. Complete Detention Officer Basic training within first year of employment. (Detention Officer Basic is in Helena Montana at the Law Enforcement Academy and is a month straight with weekends off. You would be attending whenever a spot is available in one of the classes.) Become CPR and First Aid Certified within the first year of employment. When available become OC and/or Taser Certified.

Duties: The job of a Detention Officer is to house felony and misdemeanor inmates while maintaining safety and security of the inmates, staff, visitors, and facility as a whole. This involves Booking, Inmate Observation and Supervision, Transports, Laundry, Releases, Handcuffing, Court, Serving Meals, Cell Extractions, General Maintenance, Cleaning, Record Keeping, Finger Printing, Book Exchange, Drug testing, Report Writing, Cell Searches, Data Entry, and most importantly dealing with high stress situations involving drunk, high, homicidal, suicidal, injured, sick, and mentally unstable inmates.
