Dental Assistant Trainer

Adhere to the TCC Ch'eghwtsen' model of service and guiding principle which requires providing timely and effective service along with the ability to interact with others in a way that inspires trust and demonstrates respect, compassion and empathy.
Essential Functions1. Be responsible for devising, reviewing, and updating as necessary training curriculum in accordance with Indian Health Services (IHS) standards of Dental Assisting.
2. Instruct dental assistant trainees, new employees, and practicum students in the following areas:
a. Dental Anatomy
b. Four handed dentistry
c. Chair side assisting
d. Dental instrument identification and use
e. Dental terminology
f. Recording intraoral dental examinations
g. Dental materials
h. Infection control
i. Sterilization of instruments
j. Radiology science and technique
k. Oral hygiene instruction and prevention
l. Sealant application
m. Dental practices, policies, techniques, and procedures.
n. Basic laboratory procedures.
3. Will serve as a dental assistant as needed in support of the clinic mission and will, while serving in this capacity, be subject to the position description of a Dental Assistant I.
4. Travel in support of village dental care to a minimum of four villages per year.
Other Responsibilities:1. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
2. Dental Certification from an accredited school of Dental Assisting.
3. Five years’ experience as a dental assistant (five years’ experience must be within the previous 7 years).
4. Must be a DAII within the IHS system with a minimum of one year experience working in the TCC Dental Department.
5. Must have a demonstrated aptitude for dental training experience within the previous year. This experience as a trainer must show the ability to successfully train peers and new employees in all phases of dental assisting.
6. Must have current CPR certification or be certified within thirty days of hire.
7. Must have current IHS Radiology certification or be certified within thirty days of hire.
8. Computer experience, including expertise in the use of Windows and MS Office applications.
9. Must have a minimum of one year experience working with Dentrix Enterprise software and be highly skilled in the use of Dentrix functions common to dental assisting.
10. Must be able to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in the following function of Dentrix Enterprise: Dental Examination charting, Treatment needed, Multi-code usage, changing providers, switching between primary and permanent dentition, and entering Perio charting.
11. Must be proficient in completing and teaching each of following: sterilization of instruments, infection control, dental assisting techniques, recording of dental exams, experience in the taking of intraoral x-rays, (Panorex, bitewings, periapicals, endodontic x-rays, pediatric x-rays, Cephs and dental CT’s), ability to take impressions, pour and trim models, fabricate dental bite guards.
12. Must be current on all immunizations; Hep B and yearly PPD.
13. Must pass background check pursuant to federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements.

3. Confident in providing dental assisting support during village travel.
4. Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
5. Knowledge of AAAHC and OSHA standards.
6. Knowledge of HIPAA and HITECH standards.
7. Comprehensive knowledge of the instruments, equipment, materials and standardized dental procedures used in general dentistry.
