Our Homeschool Community Is Looking for an Exceptional Online Data Science Tutor

Modulo is seeking a thoughtful, rigorous, and engaging Data Science tutor to support homeschool families who want more than buzzwords. They want their kids to develop true fluency in statistics, programming, and analytical thinking. This is not a generic tutoring gig. It’s an opportunity to guide curious students through meaningful, real-world projects and help them build a solid foundation in both theory and practice.

This is a fully remote, contract-based position. Tutors can be located anywhere, as long as they are reliable, communicative, and committed to helping students thrive. While we’re hiring specifically for data science support, strong applicants may also be considered for other roles.

About Modulo

Modulo is a tutoring and learning support platform built for homeschoolers and families creating alternatives to traditional school. We match students with tutors, classes, and curriculum based on their unique learning profile. Many of our learners are gifted, twice-exceptional, or just need a more flexible and personalized approach than what traditional schools can offer.

Our families are deeply engaged in their children’s education. They’re looking for tutors who will take their kids seriously, help them build lasting understanding, and connect learning to the real world.

About You

  • You have a strong foundation in statistics, data science, or applied math.
  • Youve worked on real-world projects-maybe in research, health, social science, or industry-and understand how data is actually used.
  • Youre frustrated by how often data science†is reduced to buzzwords or trendy tools. You want to help students build genuine fluency, not just run code.
  • Youre a clear and patient communicator who adapts your teaching approach to the needs, goals, and interests of each student.
  • You understand how to teach data science in developmentally appropriate ways. With younger students, you may use visual tools, simple categorization activities, or storytelling to build early data fluency. With older students, you can scaffold more advanced tools and techniques while helping them explore their own questions through real-world analysis.
  • You can indicate your preferred age range when applying, and we will only match you with students in that group.
  • You are warm, organized, reliable, and committed to showing up for students with consistency and care.

Responsibilites:

  • Teach engaging, one-on-one online sessions in data science, statistics, or programming.
  • Guide students through hands-on projects and real-world datasets aligned with their interests.
  • Use tools like Python, R, or SQL to help students explore, clean, visualize, and analyze data.
  • Introduce younger learners to foundational concepts through visuals, playful exploration, and data storytelling.
  • Model the full data science cycle: asking meaningful questions, analyzing data, interpreting findings, and communicating results clearly.
  • Encourage students to think critically about bias, ethics, and the limitations of data.
  • Adapt your teaching approach to each learners age, background, and goals.
  • Provide consistent communication and updates to families.

Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of data science, statistical reasoning, and applied analysis.
  • Experience teaching or tutoring students, ideally online and in a 1-on-1 setting.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Python, R, SQL, Jupyter notebooks, or Google Colab.
  • Experience with real-world applications of data science, including personal or professional projects.
  • Comfortable supporting gifted, neurodivergent, or self-directed learners-or open to learning how.
  • Clear communicator with the ability to break down complex ideas and encourage student-led discovery.
  • Organized, responsive, and able to maintain a consistent schedule.

What Sets a Great Modulo Tutor Apart

The best Modulo tutors are guides, not just instructors. They don’t just teach syntax-they help students:

  • Understand how and why statistical methods work
  • Build confidence through iterative, hands-on learning
  • Ask and answer real-world questions using data
  • Develop critical thinking, not just coding speed
  • Ask ethical questions about data collection and usage
  • Connect their learning to personal interests and current issues
  • Communicate findings clearly, through conversation, visuals, or writing

Student Ages and Matching

Our students range from upper elementary through high school and occasionally into early college. Tutors are never expected to teach all ages. When applying, you’ll indicate which age range(s) you’re most comfortable with, and we’ll match you accordingly. We value tutors who know how to adapt their methods to support younger learners, advanced teens, or anywhere in between.

Schedule

Tutors set their own availability. Families are matched based on subject fit, experience, and schedule. You may be matched with one or more students depending on demand.
