Job Purpose


The CASA Coordinator plays a vital role in supporting the work of Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers who serve children involved in the child welfare system due to abuse or neglect. This role includes supervising volunteers, ensuring high-quality advocacy, coordinating training, and building strong relationships with the courts, child welfare professionals, and community partners.


CASA volunteers are highly trained individuals who act as an additional set of eyes and ears for the court, advocating for the best interests of children. Each CASA volunteer is assigned to one child or sibling group at a time and remains with them throughout the case, providing consistent support until the child or sibling group is placed in a safe, permanent home and the case is closed. Full-time position serving Saginaw, Bay, and Huron counties.


This position requires occasional evening and weekend availability for volunteer support and training, as well as CAN Council events. Travel across Saginaw, Bay, and Huron counties is required.

Requirements


  • Bachelor�s degree in social work, human services, criminal justice, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered. ·
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience in a related field. · Knowledge of child welfare and permanency planning for children desired.
  • Working knowledge of the family court system and child protective proceedings is desired.
  • Interviewing and assessment skills; experience in planning, organizing, training, and supervising programs or volunteers. ·
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. ·
  • Proficiency in Microsoft programs and ability to learn new databases. ·
  • Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to interact with community partners with professionalism. ·
  • Organized and collaborative; proactive and timely; ability to work efficiently, effectively, and with flexibility.


Key Responsibilities:


CASA Volunteer Supervision & Retention


  • Maintain a volunteer caseload of approximately 30.
  • Ensure volunteer case assignments follow established protocols for completion.
  • Help develop initial action plans and ongoing strategies for advocacy for each case.
  • Provide guidance, consultation, instruction, and support to assigned volunteers.
  • Maintain up-to-date case records electronically in the program database.
  • Assist in planning and arranging volunteer recognition and appreciation activities.
  • Ensure timely submission of CASA volunteer contact logs and court reports.
  • Serve as a professional liaison between the court, collateral professionals, and CASA volunteers.
  • Support advocacy efforts and communicate regularly with CASA volunteers.
  • Maintain general knowledge of each child on assigned volunteer caseload.
  • Initiate and complete monthly and quarterly contact with all volunteers.
  • Assist CAN Council staff in various tasks and responsibilities as necessary.


CASA Recruitment, Screening & Training


  • Assist in the recruitment of volunteers by participating in various activities.
  • Help ensure that applicants are suitable CASA volunteers.
  • Participate in pre-training interviews for volunteers.
  • Assess volunteer aptitude by monitoring class participation.
  • Plan for and conduct initial CASA training in compliance with National CASA standards.
  • Plan for and conduct ongoing in-service training opportunities for active CASA volunteers.
