Combustion Turbine (CT) Technician

The Sayreville plant is powered by four Westinghouse W501AA combustion turbines and operates on a versatile dual-fuel system, capable of burning both natural gas and fuel oil. Its remote start capabilities allow operators to quickly and safely bring units online in response to changing grid demands. This advanced configuration ensures dependable, high-efficiency power generation across Sayreville CT1-CT4, supporting system reliability during peak and emergency conditions.

The Combustion Turbine (CT) Technician at the Sayreville facility is responsible for assisting in the operation of power plant systems. This position entails active participation in start-up, shutdown, and routine operations of various plant systems, including critical auxiliary apparatus such as air compressors, circulating water systems, and generator cooling systems. Performing tests, inspections, and minor equipment repairs to maintain optimal operating conditions is a fundamental aspect of this role. The CT Technician collaborates closely with the Control Room Operator, other operations and maintenance personnel, and management to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Sayreville power plant.

• Starts, stops, and operates combustion turbine-generators and associated auxiliary equipment as required. Observes and records readings from indicators and instruments to ensure safe operation within prescribed limits.
  
• Installs, tests, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs a wide range of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, microprocessor-based, and solid-state equipment, including motors, generators, rectifiers, transformers, relays, and associated control systems throughout the generating station and substation.
  
• Performs testing, calibration, and repair of instrumentation, test apparatus, and laboratory equipment, including systems related to environmental protection and monitoring.
  
• Performs mechanical maintenance, installation, and repair on station equipment, structures, and buildings.
  
• Operates key auxiliary systems, including air compressors, circulating water systems, boiler feedwater treatment systems, wastewater systems, generator cooling systems, boiler feedwater and condensate systems, and locally controlled electrical and mechanical equipment.
  
• Follows instructions from the Control Room Operator at isolated panels to clear or prepare equipment for service. Adheres to all operating procedures and ensures proper tagging, testing, and safety measures are implemented.
  
• Maintains and troubleshoots Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) equipment.
  
• Maintains accurate operational logs and records, completes reports and documentation (e.g., time sheets, material requisitions, outage logs), and reports any abnormal conditions, taking corrective actions per established procedures.
  
• Operates plant equipment required to perform job duties, including vehicles, cranes, and hoists.
  
• Directs and oversees the work of others assigned to assist.
  
• Operates and monitors fuel-related equipment, performs periodic fuel oil inventories and sampling, and monitors fuel oil deliveries.
  
• Completes other tasks as assigned.
  
• When work in this classification is temporarily interrupted or delayed, may be assigned to other tasks within the same occupational group. In emergency situations, may be assigned other reasonable duties that can be performed safely.

The CT Technician reports to the Maintenance Manager and takes direction from the management team. Additionally, this position will coordinate with all other plant personnel to ensure safe and reliable plant operations.

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

The CT Technician works a standard Monday to Friday day shift schedule, ensuring consistent plant operation and support during regular business hours. This position will also occasionally necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or “On call†status may also be required.

This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $51.68 to $57.40 per hour, depending on qualifications as per CBA.

• An Associate degree in Plant Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Process Technology, or a related field is preferred. Alternatively, equivalent technical training in industrial maintenance or instrumentation and control is beneficial, though not required. Relevant industry or military experience may be considered in lieu of education on a year-for-year basis.
  
• A minimum of two years of hands-on experience in power plant operations, including start-up, shutdown, and routine monitoring of combustion turbines or similar equipment, is desirable.
  
• Experience in water chemistry control, analysis of water conditions, water treatment facility operations, and chemical handling requirements is desirable.
  
• Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion turbine operations, industrial safety, hazardous waste management, and inspection/recording of plant parameters is highly desirable.
  
• Experience reading and interpreting piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs) and process controls is desirable.
  
• Extensive working knowledge of the power plant industry is preferred.
  
• Proficiency in troubleshooting and maintaining mechanical, electrical, and control systems related to combustion turbines and auxiliary equipment.
  
• Familiarity with remote start systems, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and plant monitoring/control software.
  
• Ability to follow lockout/tagout procedures and adhere to all safety and environmental regulations during maintenance and operational activities.
  
• Must be able to successfully complete the Combustion Turbine (CT) Technician Qualification Program within the policy-defined timeframe.
  
• Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver�s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
