The mission of the NURSING DIRECTOR is to provide functions, including basic health care, which help people cope with difficulties in daily living associated with their actual or potential health or illness problems or the treatment thereof requiring a substantial amount of scientific knowledge of technical skill.


JOB DESCRIPTION:


  • Responsible for the effective leadership of the division of Nursing Service
  • Responsible for the coordination and directing of nursing activities toward common hospital goals
  • Participates in the development of the hospital mission, strategic plan budgets, resource allocations, operative plans and policies, including those that affect the nursing staff members ability to provide quality care and policies that affect the staff members and care provided
  • Ensures compliance with nursing care standards established by state, federal and local regulatory agencies and adherence to institutional objectives and policies pertaining to nursing administration


The nurse executive has authority and responsibility to help assure that the following functions are addressed:


  • Development of hospital wide patient care programs, policies and procedures that describe how patients� nursing care needs are assessed, evaluated and met.
  • Development and implementation of the hospital�s plan for providing nursing care, treatment, and services to those patients requiring nursing care, treatment, and services.
  • Participation with leaders from the governing body, management, medical staff and clinical areas in the hospital�s decision-making structures and processes
  • Responsibility for implementing an effective and ongoing program to measure, assess, and improve the quality of nursing care, treatment, and services delivered to patients
  • Approves nursing policies and procedures, nursing standards of patient care, treatment, and services, and standards of nursing practice before implementation
  • Recommends, advocates and/or implements, new or changes to existing policies and procedures, laws or regulations
  • Provides consultation, makes recommendations, gives appropriate advice, and/or facilitates decisions.
  • Acts as a resource to provide information or determine the most effective way of meeting the needs of management, staff, clients or customers.
  • Monitors and evaluated operations, programs, processes and/or practice for quality and effectiveness; makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Delivers presentations, stand up training, or instruction to staff, management, clients, or the general public


The NURSING DIRECTOR is responsible for the integration of the department/service into the primary functions of the organization; the coordination and integration of interdepartmental and intradepartmental services; the development and implementation of policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services; recommending a sufficient number of qualified and competent persons to provide care/service; determination of the qualifications and competence of department/service personnel; the continuous assessment and improvement of the quality control programs, as appropriate; the maintenance of quality control programs, as appropriate; the orientation and continuing education of all persons in the department/service; and recommendations for space and other resources needed by the department/service; functions at the executive level to provide effective and coordinated leadership to deliver nursing care, treatment, and services; participates in defined and established meetings of the hospital’s corporate leaders, and with other clinical and managerial leaders.; responsible for ensuring that nursing policies, procedures, and standards describe and guide how the nursing staff provides the nursing care, treatment, and services required by all patients and populations served by the hospital and as defined the hospital plan of care; ensure that all nursing policies and procedures are defined, documented, and accessible to the nursing staff in written form; has the authority to speak on behalf of nursing to the same extent that other hospital leaders speak for their respective disciplines or departments; and has final authority over those associated with providing nursing care, treatment, and services.


SUPERVISES: Supervises all the nursing staff of the Medical/Surgical Unit, and Emergency Department, including Nurse Supervisors. The NURSING DIRECTOR reports to the Administrator/CEO of the Hospital.


QUALIFICATIONS


1. Minimal acceptable qualifications:


  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current registration with the Texas Board of Nursing.
  • Five (5) years of experience in nursing.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills and knowledge; including specifically:
  • Knowledge of current theoretical approaches to the delivery of nursing care and the strategies for examining and applying relevant concepts and;
  • Knowledge of current leadership, management and quality improvement concepts and the ability to participate in developing and implementing organizational strategies to address opportunities to improve the delivery of nursing care to patients.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


  • Administering the activities of the multimillion-dollar departments is stressful and strenuous
  • Physically requires making frequent patient care rounds to interact with physicians, staff and patients and accomplishing the managerial tasks as well
  • Requires some lifting, occasionally/rarely greater than 40#.
  • Occasionally you may be exposed to infectious hazards.
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
  • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time

The scope and complexity of the nursing care needs of the population served is broad for this tertiary care hospital. The adequate availability of nursing support staff and services to assist the individual in addressing the responsibilities of the position.
