Position Summary

The Chaplain provides professional and competent spiritual care ministry, and is responsible for serving the spiritual, religious, and emotional needs of others in inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. As a member of the healthcare team, the chaplain is directly responsible for the implementation of the mission, values, polices, and procedures of the Department of Spiritual Health Services and the facility in which they serve.

Position Specific Responsibilities

• + Provide effective spiritual support and appropriate religious/spiritual resources that contribute to the well-being of the care recipients, their families, and caregivers.
  

• + Provide spiritual care that respects diversity and differences including, but not limited to culture, gender, and sexual orientation and spiritual/religious practices.
  

• + Triage and manage crises in the practice of spiritual care.
  

• + Formulate and utilize individualized spiritual assessments, interventions, outcomes, and care plans in order to contribute effectively to the well-being of the person receiving care, and accurately and concisely document this care in the appropriate records according to discipline standards (including electronic medical record) at the point of service.
  

• + Share in Department coverage to meet the patient care needs.
  

• + Promote the integration of spiritual health services into the life and service of the institution in which one functions.
  

• + Establish and maintain professional and interdisciplinary relationships, including collaborative relationships with community clergy and faith group leaders.
  

• + Understand and function within the institutional culture and systems, including utilizing business principles and practices appropriate to one�s role in the organization.
  

• + Promote, facilitate, and support ethical decision-making in one�s workplace.
  

• + Promotes institution and department initiatives.
  

• + Promote how research literature informs the profession of chaplaincy and one�s spiritual care practice and support research projects as needed.
  

• + Present formally on spiritual health to the interdisciplinary team, students, or community organizations.
  

• + Mentor students, including but not limited to CPE students, nursing students, etc.
  

Education and/or Experience

• Required - Master's Degree Theology, Divinity, Spirituality, Pastoral Ministry or the equivalent applicable education from an accredited institution.
  
• Required - Coursework/Training 4 units-Accredited or approved by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), by programs that were accredited by the former United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Commission on Certification and Accreditation (USCCB/CCA), or the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC/ACSS). Equivalency for one unit of CPE (two units in CASC) may be considered.

Skills

• Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.
  
• Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from leaders, team members, investors, and external parties. Strong written and verbal communications.
  
• Language Skills: Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English. Articulates and embraces integrated healthcare at home philosophy.
  
• Language Skills: Effective oral and written communication.
  
• Other Skills and Abilities: For those working as Catholic priests: Ordained in accordance with the requirements of the Roman Catholic faith tradition, has been acknowledged by the priest�s bishop/superior to be a priest in good standing in the Roman Catholic Church, and has received the faculties to provide sacramental ministry by the local bishop.
  
• Other Skills and Abilities: Catholic Context: Knowledge of the Religious and Ethical Directives of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.
  
• Other Skills and Abilities: Working knowledge of different ethical theories appropriate to one�s professional context.
  
• Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to walk and stand for the greater part of the day.
  
• Other Skills and Abilities: Professional behavior and appearance.
  
• Other Skills and Abilities: Incorporate the spiritual and emotional dimensions of human development into one�s practice of care.
  
• Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to utilize primary research and research literature to inform the profession of chaplaincy and one�s spiritual care practice.
  
• Other Skills and Abilities: Working knowledge and function within the institutional culture and systems, including utilizing business principles and practices appopriate to one�s role in the organization.
  
• Other Skills and Abilities: Develop, coordinate, and facilitate public worship/spiritual practices appropriate to diverse settings and needs.
  
• Other Skills and Abilities: Facilitate theological/spiritual reflection for those in one�s care practice.
  

Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations

• Required within 3 years of hire National Chaplain Certification (Vendor Managed)
  
• CA: Providence Holy Cross Medical Center - within 30 days of hire California Fire and Life Safety Card - National Organization (Vendor Managed)
  
• Providence Tarzana Medical Center - within 30 days of hire California Fire and Life Safety Card - National Organization (Vendor Managed)
  

Physical Demands and Work Environment: The demands of this role necessitate a team member to effectively perform essential functions. Adaptations can be made to accommodate team members with disabilities. Regular standing, walking, and manual dexterity are fundamental, along with the ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Visual acuity requirements include close and distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. In a healthcare setting, exposure to bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and conditions typical to the field is expected. Routine use of standard medical equipment and tools associated with clinical care is essential.
