The purpose of this position is to perform inspections of new single-family construction and residential and
commercial buildings. The work is performed under the direction of the Building Commissioner.
Conducts plan reviews including building, electrical and mechanical systems.
Conducts plan reviews, inspections and policing for all signs.
Performs commercial and residential building inspections; inspects buildings, electrical and mechanical
systems, accessibility and structural elements.
Performs property maintenance inspections; prepares notification letters and assists residents and business
owners/agents with related questions. Performs business license inspections. Performs commercial new
construction inspections.
Provides assistance to builders, contractors and residents in interpreting codes, ordinances and statutes;
conducts meetings. Responds to questions and inquiries from residents regarding construction and code
compliance. Investigates and resolves citizen complaints. Conducts file and information searches for a
variety of inquiries.
Prepares a variety of reports, reviews and correspondence; prepares plan review documentation and notices
of violations, etc.
Checks spot surveys.
Gathers and processes information for Village address and zoning map updates.
Maintains microfilm files.
Inputs data for permit software.
Attends seminars and meetings.
Assists citizens; schedules inspections.
Performs other duties as assigned and required.
High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by vocation and technical courses in the building trades
with three years of experience in the building trades as a contractor, superintendent, foreman, or inspector,
or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite
knowledge skills and abilities for this job. Position requires possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license.
ICC certification as defined by the Building Commissioner required within one year of employment.
Requires the ability to perform basic level of data analysis including the ability to review, classify, categorize,
prioritize and/or reference data, statutes and/or guidelines and/or group, rank, investigate and diagnose.
Requires discretion in determining and referencing such to established standards to recognize interactive
effects and relationships.
Requires the ability to persuade, convince, influence, train and monitor, in favor of a desired outcome.
Requires the ability to act as a lead person.
Requires the ability to communicate orally and in writing with the Building Commissioner and all
department personnel, other Village departments, permit applicants, architects, contractors, residents,
business owners, and the public.
Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference, descriptive and/or advisory data and information such
as construction plans, surveys, bonds, permit packages, reports, codes, maps, technical operating manuals,
statutes, procedures, guidelines and non-routine correspondence.
Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment,
machinery and tools such as a computer and other office machines, a vehicle, architect and engineer scales,
electrical testers, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages and
decimals; may require the ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions and algebra and
geometry.
Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in
written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify
methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.
Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in critical and/or
unexpected situations involving moderate risk to the organization.
Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate but not constant physical effort which involves some lifting,
carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects weighing twenty to fifty pounds, and may occasionally involve
objects and materials up to 125 pounds.
Requires the ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics
of colors, shapes, sounds, odors, and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.
Ability to work under conditions that require exposure to environmental factors such as temperature and
noise extremes, machinery, wetness, or electrical currents. This exposure may cause some discomfort and
presents a risk of injury.
