Note : The normal starting pay for this position is the minimum of the pay range listed above. A higher rate of pay may be considered, dependent on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant and/or the City’s step placement policy.

ELIGIBILITY LIST PREFERENCE ORDER

Full-time City employees will receive preference in the following order: major division first, then department, then all other full-time City employees. Part-time/year-round City employees will receive preference next. If there are no qualified full-time City employees or part-time/year-round City employees, external applicants will then be considered.

POSITION DESIGNATION

This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., § 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.

DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION

This is a third (3 rd ) shift position to include weekends.

JOB SUMMARY

This classification is located in various departments throughout the City of Oklahoma City. This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the

Maintenance Division of the Airports Department . However, an eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies, including vacancies in other departments, per provisions of the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement. The work involves tasks related to installing, operating, maintaining, and repairing air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Employees of this classification must have previously developed technical knowledge and skills relevant to heating, air conditioning and refrigeration units. Essential job functions include : performing tasks related to installing, operating, maintaining, and repairing air conditioning and refrigeration systems; conducting inspections to determine proper operation of equipment and needed preventative maintenance; making calibrations on a wide variety of complex equipment and repairing or replacing defective parts, units of equipment, or complete systems. The employee is also responsible for building and facilities maintenance and performs these tasks with little supervision. Occasional conferences with a supervisor are conducted to discuss work in progress or specific problems.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Knowledge of calibration procedures.
  
• Knowledge of proper charging procedures for all types of air conditioning equipment (low, medium and high temperature).
  
• Knowledge of operation of air conditioning and heating systems.
  
• Knowledge of refrigeration tools, gauges and work aids.
  
• Skill in reading and interpreting building blueprints or schematics.
  
• Skill in diagnosing equipment malfunctions.
  
• Skill in maintaining/repairing air conditioning and heating systems.
  
• Skill in working with electricity.
  
• Skill in supervising.
  
• Skill in verbally conveying technical requirements for equipment maintenance to supervisor and co-workers.
  
• Ability to install new heating, air or ventilating systems.
  
• Ability to record and interpret written information.
  
• Ability to make independent decisions.
  
• Possession of a valid Mechanical Journeyman (Refrigeration) License.
  
• Possession of a valid Driver License (Operator).

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Outside frequently, exposed to heat, cold, humidity, rain, etc.
  
• Possibility of deep cuts, bruises, sprains, fractures, and burns from utilizing electricity and equipment such as soldering iron, pump units, etc.
  
• Occasional work more than 12 feet above floor or ground level on equipment such as ladders and/or scaffolding.
  
• Frequent work in confined or cramped positions while working in areas such as attics, ducts, etc.
  
• Subject to working near moving machinery such as pulleys, fan blower motors, etc.
  
• Subject to working near steady and fairly loud noises from sources such as equipment and machinery.
  
• Frequently exposed to large amounts of dust; possible exposure to dust containing free silica or asbestos.
  
• Possible exposure to toxins such as natural gas and phosgene gas.
  
• Possible exposure to chemical irritants such as condenser cleaners.
  
• Possible exposure to explosives such as natural gas.
  
• Frequent exposure to electrical hazards causing the possibility of shock.
  
• Frequently required to work weekends, holidays, shift work, and/or overtime.
  
• Subject to local travel on a daily basis.
  

Note : Typical City employee working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, working hours vary (may require work to begin before 8:00 a.m. and/or end beyond 5:00 p.m., and/or may require work on weekends and holidays), and are subject to change, based on the duties and location of the position and the business needs of the assigned work unit/department.

• Strength enough to pull, push, lift, or carry objects such as compressors weighing up to 125 lbs. with physical or mechanical assistance.

• Flexibility enough to bend, twist, or reach out to perform tasks such as cleaning or changing filters, replacing motors, etc.
  
• Mobility enough to move oneself from place to place.
  
• Balance enough to work on equipment while standing on a ladder.
  
• Arm/hand steadiness enough to performs tasks such as soldering.
  
• Manual and finger dexterity enough to use hand tools and perform tasks such as wiring circuitry, splicing wires, etc.
  
• Near vision enough to read gauges and documents such as blueprints, schematics, etc.
  
• Visual color discrimination enough to work with color coded wires.
  
• Hearing enough to perform tasks such as the identification of equipment malfunctions, checking fluid and gas lines for leaks, etc.
  
• Speech enough to communicate clearly and distinctly with citizens and co-workers in person and by two-way radio.

Note: An eligibility list will be established from this posting consisting of applicants who receive a score of 70 percent or better. Multiple selection procedures may be utilized; a minimum of 70 percent or better will be required on each; and the results of multiple selection procedures will be equally weighted. The eligibility list will be in effect for 180 days from the date of the final selection procedure and will be used to fill future vacancies.
