Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Community Development Director, the Building Code Administrator serves as the primary technical expert and authoritative interpreter of all adopted building, fire, and lighting codes, including but not limited to the International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Fire Code, and related ordinances, as defined by the International Code Council (ICC) model codes. This highly responsible position provides definitive technical guidance and code interpretations to members of the Building Safety staff, other departments, design professionals, contractors, and the public, ensuring the highest standards of safety, public welfare, and code compliance. Serves as the Building Official and Fire Marshal and as the lead professional in advising and administering the Board of Appeals. This position provides mentorship and training to Building Safety staff but does not have a direct supervisory role.

  • Serves as Building Official and Fire Marshal. Interprets and enforces building codes and coordinates construction projects by researching codes and related material, consulting with owners, designers, staff and plan review consultants, and resolving issues as needed.
  • Provides training and mentorship to Building Safety staff.
  • Ensures building permit and inspection process is administered in accordance with local, State and other regulations.
  • Establishes and maintains partnerships and effective working relationships with other departments, agencies, local businesses, community groups and professional organizations. This includes relationships with homeowners, business owners, architects, engineers, builders, and industry groups.
  • Communicates with the community, other agencies and local governments, our customers and town residents via the town newsletter, the department�s website, attending community and organizational meetings.
  • Work requires comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of this organization.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with department and/or Town policies and procedures.
  • Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows Town-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the Town�s Health and Safety Manual.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


  • Bachelor�s Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or other related field.
  • A minimum of four (5) years� experience in building inspection, fire inspection, construction plan review, construction management, or a related field; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of formal education and experience sufficient to perform the Essential Functions


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • A minimum of four (4) other ICC certifications including Commercial Building Inspector (B2) certification and Building Plans Examiner (B3).
  • Municipal or county experience in a Building Safety and Fire function.
  • Registered design professional.


REQUIREMENTS


  • ICC Certified Building Official certification required upon hire and a Fire Code Official Certification within six months of hire.
  • A valid Arizona driver�s license is required within ten days of hire.
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation.
