As a Public Defender, you will provide legal representation to individuals who cannot afford to hire a private attorney. This role requires a strong commitment to advocating for clients in criminal defense and abuse and/ or neglect cases. You will work collaboratively with clients to understand their cases and develop effective legal strategies while ensuring that their rights are protected throughout the judicial process.
- Represent clients in court proceedings, including trials and hearings, ensuring their legal rights are upheld.
- Conduct thorough legal research using tools such as LexisNexis and Westlaw to prepare for cases.
- Draft legal documents, including motions, pleadings, and briefs, with strong writing skills and attention to detail.
- Negotiate settlements and plea agreements on behalf of clients.
- Provide counsel on a range of legal issues, including a mixture of misdemeanor, felony, juvenile, and abuse/neglect cases.
- Maintain accurate case files and documentation in a law office setting.
- Collaborate with other legal professionals to ensure comprehensive representation of clients.
- Stay informed about changes in laws and regulations that may affect client cases.
Candidates should possess the following Requirements:
Active West Virginia Law License and reliable transportation.
· Ability to conduct legal research and analysis pertaining to caseload.
· Represent clients through the entire case process.
· Drafting of legal documents and effective communications with clients.
· Work effectively with colleagues and staff on complex cases.
