JOB TITLE: Alternative School Supervisor


JOB SUMMARY: This position supervises students who have been assigned to alternative school for a variety of reasons. Responsibilities include monitoring student behavior, assisting students with assignments, and maintaining communication with HS administrators. Depending upon school assignment, may use behavior modification techniques as assigned in working with students.

BUILDING ASSIGNMENT: As Needed


REPORTS TO: Building Principal or Assistant Principal

WORKS WITH: Certified staff, classified staff, students


POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION LEVEL: High School Diploma or Equivalent

SKILL LEVEL: Ability to work well within a learning community with parents, teachers, students, administrators, and staff with courtesy, tact, and good judgment. Maintain confidentiality and integrity in regards to student information. Ability to develop positive rapport with students. Ability to monitor student behavior and maintain order. Must have knowledge and ability to apply basic computer, math, and language skills. Must be flexible and willing to undertake a variety of tasks, sometimes at the direction of more than one person. Must be able to work effectively with a variety of students.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity; see and read a computer screen and printed materials with or without visual aids; hear and understand speech at normal office levels and on phone; and to bend, stoop, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead. Occasional climbing and reaching. Must be able to occasionally lift up to 40 pounds.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Works indoors in a climate-controlled environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Always actions:* Be available to assist as needed.
  • Follows established safety procedures and district policies at all times.
  • Responds to emergency requests in a timely manner.
  • Works cooperatively with all staff members.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Essential Functions:* Regular, timely, in-person attendance.
  • Monitors student behavior in the alternative school classroom; reinforces appropriate behavior and ensures that students stay on task. Communicates alternative school rules. Refers students who violate program rules to school administrator.
  • Supervises alternative education environment during summer months on a modified schedule to provide credit recovery opportunities and consistency during summer break.
  • Assists students with work assignments; answers questions. Contacts teachers to obtain homework assignments as needed. Reinforces classroom learning activities.
  • Maintains records of student activities and behavior while in alternative school classroom; forwards information to teachers and school administrators. Types program-related materials.
  • Exchanges information with school staff concerning students assigned to program; participates in staff meetings as requested.
  • May develop written and oral behavior modification materials for use in helping students recognize a need for change and/or compromise in a specific area of their behavior. Provides these materials to students; instructs students to read materials and complete exercises by deadline. Encourages students to improve their behavior.
  • May act as time-out supervisor; talks to angry or upset students; assists students to calm down so they can attend their next class in a frame of mind conducive to learning.
  • May substitute for teacher absences and cover classes and/or duties.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.


EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated by the building administrator.
