JOB DESCRIPTION


Summary


The Afterschool Support Specialist is responsible for providing support to an afterschool program site and summer enrichment program for school-aged students. The Afterschool Support Specialist will be assigned to a community-based afterschool site and is responsible for ensuring safe and efficient operations of the program from staff, interns, and volunteers. The Afterschool Support Specialist is responsible for integrating afterschool programming with a state-funded afterschool program, and youth mentoring initiative providing hands-on coaching and mentorship for refugee transition-aged youth focused on academic success, career and vocation attainment, and higher education. As part of both the afterschool programming, the Afterschool Support Specialist will also be responsible for assisting in assessing students, documenting progress, and updating records as well as overseeing an afterschool class of refugee youth.


Essential Functions


  • Responsible for supporting youth afterschool enrichment programming at the Savannah Inspiritus afterschool site.
  • Supervise and tutor refugee youth (grades K-12) in all academic subjects, specifically focusing on literacy skills, self-sufficiency, creativity, and academic progress.
  • Facilitate student afterschool assessments for each student on site.
  • Create and implement engaging and relevant lesson plans in cooperation with the Afterschool Lead Teacher.
  • Complete home visits as necessary for program enrollment, parent engagement, ongoing support.
  • Assist Youth Services Coordinator and Afterschool Lead Teacher in the planning and execution of summer camp programming, including but not limited to curriculum development, teaching, facilitation, and transportation.
  • Carry out supplemental activities, such as art projects, sports, teambuilding, and educational games.
  • Practice appropriate behavior management techniques and be aware of surroundings to ensure the safety of the students at all times.
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of the classroom and all other spaces utilized
  • Provide Afterschool Lead Teacher and Youth Services Coordinator with frequent updates on students regarding academic progress, student attendance, behavior, and overall well-being.
  • Attend trainings, events and meetings for the Afterschool Program, occasionally outside of regular work hours
  • Maintain punctuality and good attendance, providing notification to the Youth Services Coordinator in the event of lateness or unexpected absence, as well as following organization protocol for planned absences
  • Attends meetings, training, workshops, and conferences as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Collects and documents all required information according to grant guidelines and ensures reports are completed and accurate.
  • Keeps the Youth Service Coordinator apprised of issues or challenges.
  • Maintains personal and professional boundaries in the performance of the job.
  • Participates in Inspiritus functions and public relations activities.
  • Conforms with and abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.
  • Complies with the various federal, state or local laws that apply to and regulate the job responsibilities.
  • Participates in training and conferences related to the program, fundraising events and other Inspiritus activities and initiatives such as performance and quality improvement (PQI).

Work Environment


This job operates in both a remote/field and professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.


Physical Demands


This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary. Some athletic activity is also required for the purposes of youth interaction/programming.


Position Type and Expected Hours of Work


This is a part-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 2:30-6:30 p.m. Some work hours may occur outside of normal working hours or on the weekends. Hours may vary based on summer activities or afterschool schedules.


Travel: Up to 25% local travel


Required Education and Experience


  • Associate�s or Bachelor�s degree or international equivalent in education or human services-related or education field and minimum of two years of previous direct work experience in youth and/or human services, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Experience working in a culturally diverse environment and high level of cultural competence

  • Excellent computer skills, accurate typing, and knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

  • Must own a personal multi-passenger vehicle, hold a valid Georgia Driver�s license, have a good driving record, and have appropriate personal auto insurance


Preferred Education and Experience


  • Experience coordinating diverse teams of volunteers and/or interns.
  • Familiarity with US K-12 and university systems, social services programs, public transportation, employers, and neighborhoods
  • Experience with human services programs.
  • Reads, writes, and speaks a relevant foreign language.
