JOB SUMMARY


This position requires an Orthopedic APP with a high degree of knowledge, skills and competence in orthopedics to provide professional healthcare to patients. The APP will serve as a professional liaison between patients, staff, physicians, ancillary departments, and administration. The Orthopedic APP will work in a fast-paced acute care hospital setting, supporting a high-volume orthopedic surgery group. This role is responsible for the comprehensive assessment, evaluation, and management of orthopedic patients within the emergency department and inpatient units.


The APP will collaborate closely with hospitalists, nursing staff, physical therapists, case management, and ancillary departments to ensure high-quality, coordinated patient care throughout the continuum of treatment. Responsibilities include performing orthopedic consultations, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, initiating treatment plans, and ensuring appropriate discharge planning and follow-up care. The APP will also assist in the operating room as needed, under the supervision of orthopedic surgeons.


This position requires strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to delivering patient-centered care in a multidisciplinary team environment.


JOB QUALIFICATIONS


Education: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) Program or Nurse Practitioner (NP)


Licensure: Registered PA or NP license or eligible in the state of Georgia. BLS required.


Experience: Two (2) years of recent orthopedic clinical expertise, Physician’s Assistant or Nursing Practitioner preferred.

Accountable for continued competence in nursing practice and clinical outcomes in accordance with current evidenced-based practice guidelines.

  • The APP will first assist in orthopedic surgical procedures, including joint replacements, fracture repairs, arthroscopies, and other operative interventions when needed.
  • The orthopedic APP will provide fracture care, including splinting, casting, and minor procedures
  • The APP will order necessary diagnostic studies as agreed upon by the supervising physician and will carry responsibility for following those results.
  • The APP will ensure Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) to ensure that patient records accurately reflect the severity of illness and services provided, supporting appropriate reimbursement and quality reporting.
  • The APP will meet with patients and their families to update them on the patient�s status and plan of care, as well as answer their questions, when able.
  • The APP will inform the supervising physician of the discussion and the need for the physician to clarify any points of interest or concern.
  • The APP will complete discharge orders and dictate discharge summaries as requested by the supervising physician.
  • The APP will perform admission history and physical documentation for newly admitted patients in all areas of the hospital, then review the evaluation and plan of care with the supervising physician
  • The APP will be responsible for ensuring that all the patients covered by the service are appropriately represented in the EMR system. Additionally, he/she will coordinate the patient assignments for the rounding physicians daily and enter this information in the hospital�s system for ancillary services to access.
  • The APP will work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, case management, pharmacy, therapy, and other allied services to coordinate the care of the patient.
  • The APP will participate in staff meetings as appointed by the administration or the orthopedic group
  • The APP will perform pre-operative and post-operative assessments and documentation
  • The APP will follow all applicable hospital policies and departmental procedures.
  • The APP will comply with core measures, Joint Commission standards, and other quality initiatives of Hamilton Medical Center.
  • The APP will participate in the continuing education and mentoring of nurses in the course of his/her shift.
  • The APP will educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatment plans, rehabilitation, and prevention strategies
  • The APP will adhere to federal privacy laws concerning health information.
  • The APP is a leader in effecting change to improve the quality of patient care.
  • The APP understands financial implications of care in today�s healthcare environment.

Works in the healthcare setting with patients and families. Required to work flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays and evening hours as required by the assigned shift. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires sitting, standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions. Requires exposure to communicable diseases or body fluid.
