ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP


Work is performed under regular supervision under the Director of Libraries or designee.


JOB SUMMARY


The person in this position creates and oversees the implementation of all adult programs in both the Westlake and Rocky Mount Branches and is a key library ambassador to the community. Community engagement strategy will focus on forming and nurturing collaborative partnerships to benefit the community. Library partnerships are opportunities to provide leadership in collaborative efforts, especially in initiatives focused on lifelong learning.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


  • Develops, interprets and implements all Adult Services programs.
  • Works with community-based organizations to develop programs and other outreach activities.
  • Serves as a public advocate for the Library System and strives to create a friendly helpful library experience.
  • Coordinates all adult library program details including scheduling, marketing, and staffing for both Library locations (Rocky Mount Main Library and Westlake Branch Library).
  • Organizes and assists in the publication of events via local media (written, electronic, and oral communication), social media and outreach efforts.
  • Collaboration with other county departments to advance and support the library�s mission.
  • Acts as the Public Communications person for the library system in various forms of media platforms and with community groups.
  • Prepares drafts of news announcements for various media outlets and assists the Library Director with announcements and patron information.
  • Gathers feedback regarding current programs and services and conducts evaluations and assessments with the goal of improving user experience.
  • Models appropriate patron-centered customer service by greeting patrons and coordinating program participants.
  • Researches and develops new forms of public relations material and vehicles (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), with input from the Library Director and Assistant Library Director.
  • Maintains files and records on programs, and website updates as required.
  • Researches Grant opportunities in relation to adult programming and consults with Library Director on grant ideas.
  • Participates in library-wide planning and decision making as a member of the Library Management Team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK


  • Bachelor�s Degree with major coursework in related field;
  • Courses in computer technology preferred;
  • No prior experience required;
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and
  • Valid State of Virginia Driver�s License.

  • Knowledge of the procedures, practices, and policies of a public library.
  • Confident user of digital hardware and software tools, including personal productivity software (word processing, spreadsheet, email, calendaring, presentation); and web-based communication tools.
  • Knowledge of pertinent social media platforms.
  • Knowledge of County operations, policies, and plans.
  • Skill in data management, and professional writing.
  • Skill in customer service and public relations.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.
  • Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to coordinate a variety of projects of differing scale and scope simultaneously.
  • Ability to develop varied media and correspondence that is easy to understand, professional, and viewed as customer friendly by patrons.
  • Ability to learn standard library tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed routines.
  • Ability to perform routine clerical and recordkeeping tasks.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, customer-service oriented, working relationships with library patrons and employees.
  • Ability to learn computer and other technologically advanced skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, simultaneously and with minimal direction.
  • Ability to travel around the community to build relationships with various groups and businesses for program collaboration.
  • Ability to adapt to change; willingness to teach and learn new ways of doing things, including new technologies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other personnel and the public.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS


Must be able to occasionally lift 20 pounds, stand and sit for long periods of time at a desk, climb stairs, and operate a computer and general office equipment.


WORK ENVIRONMENT


The work environment is a typical library office environment with adequate desk, seating, and lighting for performing desk and personal computer work. Includes travel from site to site.
